Become a member and vote!
I did!
Here’s hoping for an outspoken Charlie Angus type who isn’t afraid to throw punches, speak for real Canadians, and sticks firm to their ideals of a pro working class NDP.
I’d vote for a Charlie type without hesitation.
I’m low-key excited about this. I’ll definitely be donating and voting in this election. I encourage everyone who can participate to do it as well. As we saw earlier this year with the LPC, leadership elections are very important and can dramatically the party’s performance in the federal election. Sicne much fewer people vote in leadership elections, every vote makes that much more difference.
The article lists these requirements for voting in the leadership race:
Anyone running for the leadership must obtain at least 10 per cent of the required number of signatures from New Democrats aged 25 years or younger. Candidates must also collect at least 50 signatures from each of five regions — the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies, and B.C. and the North.
But they’ve left out a few others:
Rules indicate that at least 50 per cent of the total required signatures must be from NDP members who do not identify as a cisgender man — meaning a male whose reported gender corresponds to their reported sex at birth. The party also requires a minimum of 100 signatures be from “equity-seeking groups” such as racialized members, Indigenous members, members of the LGBTQ+ community and persons living with disabilities.
So, yeah. I get the feeling the NDP isn’t coming out of the wilderness any time soon.
