- 0:33 “many of them undocumented”
- 3:10 “many of whom were undocumented”
- 8:24 “many were undocumented workers who live paycheck to paycheck”
As far as I can tell, there’s literally no reason at all why he would bring this totally random fact into this video on an unrelated topic, and I don’t even know how anyone would know that it was true. It’s sort of a trivial little inclusion but it is so out-of-place that to me it sticks out like a siren.
I have seen this type of thing in other YouTube videos just recently, where it seems equally sinister but at least makes some kind of sense to include given the subject matter (a bodycam arrest video mentioning the suspect’s immigration status or them being subject to an ICE hold before they go free for example). This one is totally out of the blue. It makes literally zero sense.
Something’s fucky

0:33, relevant and even important info because those loans will not get repaid now that the borrowers are either deported or too scared to leave their houses to go to their jobs. 3:10, same as above. 8:24 same. “Deportation fears and labor force exits may have disrupted repayment patterns.” In general, Boyle’s pointing out that these companies had very shaky business assets but were rated as being very solid. The thing that’s fucky is the rating system that made these companies look solid, attracting investors, while in fact they were risky companies to invest in.
Maybe. I don’t buy it though. I think the reason these companies are struggling is because the economy for everyone is tanking, not because undocumented immigrants specifically are all of a sudden the grouping that is creating big problems for them.
Also, Boyle’s signature super-dry sarcastic style is completely absent when he’s discussing this topic. In another video he talks about the whole H1-B visa fiasco without ever once tossing in some random comment about the whole thing potentially not being a good idea.
I see what you’re getting at, but I just don’t buy it. Something’s weird about this. That is my feeling.
