Everything I was reading before has either concluded or is delayed, so I figured I’d pick up some collected volumes while I wait for new things to come out. I grabbed:

  • Saga
  • Watchmen
  • Blow Away
  • Absolute Batman
  • Astonishing Times

I hadn’t heard of Blow Away or Astonishing Times before, but they were in the “50% off because they came out a few years ago” bin, and they looked interesting.

    Saga is awesome.

I’m not a huge DC fan at all, I can just never get into their books but I have to say the Absolute stuff is some of the best reads they’ve released in a long time IMHO. Absolute Batman is awesome. Reminds me a lot of Marvel’s Ultimate stuff before they messed that up. Just interesting that it took DC over 20 years to finally do their own version of the Ultimate universe and not mess it up.

Saga is wonderful. Beautiful characters and relationships, epic worldbuilding, great writing. And Lying Cat.

Surprised no one is mentioning Watchmen yet but this one is the granddaddy of the deconstruction movement in comics and one of the first to truly explore graphic novels as a medium. Things like panel placement take on extra meaning and depth. Not to mention that there are mysteries that the book does not bother to hold your hand to explain. It really treats the reader as an adult.

The entire Absolute line is gold.

    Haven’t read the others yet

Astonishing Times looks interesting because I thought it was a Comixology original that was only available through their app. Cool to see it in print.

I’ve only heard about Watchmen and absolute batman (probably the only batman album I’ve read) and I think wm is a masterpiece and ab was a fresh take on batman and a fun read.
