India is requiring smartphone makers like Apple and Samsung to preload devices sold in the country with a state-owned cyber security app that can't be deleted, reports Reuters. The Department of Communications in India is giving smartphone companies 90 days to begin preinstalling the Sanchar Saathi government app on all new devices that are sold. It has also requested that manufacturers push software updates to devices that are already in the supply chain.

Mandatory security is what companies call “spyware.” Good luck to all the indians out there.

This is when we find out if Apple really means it about their security and privacy.

Of course, we know the answer already from China. Money talks.

India is a vision of what the UK and USA has been trying for - politician led, terrible implementations of bad tech ideas for censorship and surveillance.

ETA: I stand corrected (for now) https://www.theverge.com/news/837209/india-sanchar-saathi-app-requirement-dropped

The reason they haven’t pulled out of China and won’t pull out of India, and won’t pull out of the US when Washington demands the same, is why Tim Cook is CEO and not someone like us.
