Can the EU just hurry up and decouple from the fucking US already? We need to invest in either a fork of Android or go full Linux mobile. A single company shouldn’t be able to dictate how millions of users access necessary apps and force governments into locking down their apps.
Decoupling doesn’t always work in favor of the people. Self-hosting can do good things but again needs to be careful navigating the regulatory regime.
I know that this is probably not that crazy of an opinion here but I don’t think they should be allowed to do that.
I can use my bank app on Graphene profile without google services installed. I really hope they won’t require this, but if they do, it’s something I’m willing to change my bank over.
Hopefully there’ll be at least one bank that doesn’t.
My family moved from Apple to Google Nexus/Pixel to Samsung & Xiaomi & now to Huawei.
I only wish Linux phones came out faster. They’ve a lot of customers outside the US willing to buy.
What Is Changing in Android Security? At the core of this shift is Google’s updated Play Integrity API. Developers can now reliably detect whether a device is running a supported Android version, receiving security updates, and passing system integrity checks. Apps — especially banking, payments, enterprise, and government services — can respond by restricting features or refusing to run on devices that fail these checks.
How is this expected to impact other operating systems like GrapheneOS? I’ve really enjoyed a pretty solid experience on Graphene.
my banking app already won’t let me use zelle on main profile without the g00g stuff. works okay on the profile with it though
I’m not that concerned. There is also microg
“To be clear, developers will have the same freedom to distribute their apps directly to users through sideloading or to use any app store they prefer.”
I’m not a dev, so kilos of salt, but I expect it to make grapheneos and side loaded apps largely unusable or extremely compromised, without devs serious and quick attention. If you can afford to support the devs, you may consider doing so.
GOS has made the statement they won’t lie, spoof, or otherwise misrepresent the runtime environment. That means lazy apps who just turn googles safety and security knob all the way to 11 will refuse to run on GOS.
