So my eggs are usually pretty set in size, and it is hard to tell in the photo but one of my hens missed a day (unusual for her) and I assumed it was because it was cold and maybe she’d slow her laying as I am used to raising chickens in Florida, and now in the Nashville area so it has been in the 20s at night lately. The next day she laid this mammoth egg. This batch(?) of chickens is young so I getting to know them still. Should I be concerned for any reason about this, or is it possible she is still growing and is just going to lay Jumbo sized eggs in the future?
Leghorns?
I’ve have a few breeds. White Plymouth rocks (that look similar to leghorns) I do have. I’m actually having a hard time remembering which hen laid that egg. I had 3 sisters I called the weird sisters, which were supposed to be all “easter eggers” so they had greenish/bluish eggs. But 1 of the 3 sisters would lay larger pale eggs unlike the other 2, but came in the same clutch. It may have been her. Also have a rhode island Red, who lays double yolks sometimes that are larger. This post was a year ago, so hard to say
Oh shit! Why did 1 year old post showed up in my feed? Lol thanks for pointing it out. Looks like everybody went back to reddit so much for protest and subreddits going dark.
People are the problem! Thank god spez is a billionaire and I hope he becomes a trillionaire.
Not sure, could be sorting by something strange, I usually sort by hot here
Young hens lay double yolkers pretty frequently. It could also have a whole second egg inside it.
Since it’s hard to tell in the image: I weighed about a dozen eggs, most are 62-64 grams. This egg is over 85g

That’s a huge egg!
Probably a double yolk, but that’s based on the ~30% increase in weight and with no concrete information on age or breed. Our girls will sometimes lay double yolks of about the same increase in size and weight (even our ducks) but as long as she’s eating and drinking normally it’s unlikely to be anything to be concerned about.
Thanks! I’ll have to remember to verify.
Could be a double yolke?
I wouldn’t be concerned. We get jumbo eggs from time to time.
