People who visit this community regularly probably already know that Lies of P is very near and dear to me. I didn’t pay much attention to the game back when it was teased and released since it looked like knock-off Bloodborne and its focus on Pinocchio seemed silly, but I have gotten around to it eventually and can happily claim that it’s in my top 3 soulslikes.
For those who have not played the game, the story of the game loosely revolves around the original novel by Carlo Collodi with some minor plot tweaks and reinterpretations of some characters to better fit the narrative. Its setting seems to be heavily inspired by Bloodborne’s bleak, thick, dark, and gothic atmosphere, combat mechanics, and speed with a hint of Sekiro mixed in with its high focus on perfect parries and prosthetic arm allowing for dynamic gameplay. Lies of P is the best of both worlds, if you will.
Definitely check the game out if you haven’t yet. It might just be the best non-From Software soulslike there currently is. The polish and quality of the game really is a standout - especially for a complete newcomer like Neowiz/Round 8.
I couldn’t think of any other game to feature on here, so for the next time: Which Soulslike would you like to see featured next week? An upcoming release? A title many have already played before?
Do let me know!
Really looking forward to both the upcoming DLC and the teased sequel.
This game is fantastic. I really loved the story and gameplay. Truly a unique experience.
Lies of P is my favorite soulslike that isn’t made by Fromsoft. It has its own faults, but nothing major and it is, by far, the closest in tone, style and feeling to what made the genre huge. I hope it gets some dlc or a sequel.
It has DLC releasing this summer! Lies of P: Overture
It’s amazing to me how a very obvious clone is actually an incredible game in and of itself. It actually improves on bloodborne gameplay-wise in a lot of ways IMO. The parries are tight but very learnable, and definitely worth learning. The story is interesting enough, though the voice acting in certain places is kinda meh (I’m looking at you Gemini). While it recycles a lot of mechanics it also introduces many new ones which could be considered overwhelming if they weren’t introduced at the excellent pace that they were.
Wow thus turned out longer than I planned, all that’s to say my expectations were very low coming in (since clones are typically a cheap attempt at riding on another game’s success), but I now think even coming in with high expectations I definitely would not have been disappointed.
