Explanation: A line from Caesar’s Commentaries on the Gallic Wars.
Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae, propterea quod a cultu atque humanitate provinciae longissime absunt
“Of all these, the Belgians are the bravest, because they are the furthest removed from the culture and civilization of the province.”
Haha, somehow that second line never got mentioned in school, that’s brilliant.
It goes to illustrate the way they broke down the world in classical times. Hard people from hard places, and soft people from soft places. Your own people were always the best, of course, although I find it interesting that where in the spectrum that fell varied between the Greeks and the Romans.
