Cuban Minister for Labor and Social Security Marta Elena Feitó Cabrera was forced to resign after she suggested there were no beggars on the island. Her remarks were met with immediate and widespread condemnation on social media across the political spectrum.

A few years ago, Cubans were not accustomed to seeing people beg for money, but as living conditions have fallen in recent years and the social safety net has thinned, begging has become far more widespread.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel publicly criticized the minister. Within hours, Feitó resigned.

Yeah even if it’s caused by the cruel US blockade you can’t just deny material reality and not expect pushback from those experiencing hardship. You need to communicate you understand the issues they’re facing and have a plan to fix them. Glad to see Diaz-Canel publicly criticizing the statement.

I know they’ve been installing a lot of solar panels and related infrastructure (courtesy of China) to improve the energy situation. Hopefully the BRICS partner membership will start to yield some benefits that help them restore higher living conditions.

I thought this was an authoritarian regime that suppressed any speech which portrays it in a bad light, like for instance there being beggars on the island.

Sorry a little confused between the other reply I got and this one. Did my comment make me come across as not a supporter of Cuba or are you talking more about the idiots that believe Cuba is some oppressive regime?

@TrippyFocus There’s still no one homeless in #Cuba, unless they prefer camping, so SHUT THE FUCK UP about beggars… like youre now seeing in EVERY CITY AND TOWN IN THE US.

That tidbit about NO ONE IN CUBA IS HOMELESS was acknowledged by orgs that HATE Cuba’s government, with the admission that if there are any, it’s because of sanctions by the US. So is any Poverty. The solution is simple. Kill an American Politician today. Any of them. Theyre all either responsible or complicit

I didn’t imply there were homeless in Cuba? I also made it pretty clear I felt the US blockade is the cause of the drop in living standards there so not sure why you’re telling me to shut up?

@TrippyFocus Just pointing out the obvious that the media, pointing at the Cuban ‘beggaring’ (how many? No one’s saying. Maybe only the one here?), doesn’t get across to readers.

          👇
Wherever American policy of any sort goes, poverty happens. Now it’s home to roost too. This time it’s gonna stay.

Know how to fix it, and Cuba’s poverty too? #LuigiMangione knows.😎

@Peter_Link @TrippyFocus “…widespread condemnation on social media across the political spectrum.”

Wtf does THAT actually mean irl? Irpeople… irl living on Cuba?

It’s propaganda and it’s being disseminated by people FRIENDLY to Cuba? Hence “STFU”.

Ps. The word ‘beggar’ is a pretty loaded way of describing panhandling, and indicates a certain Desperation that ISNT apparent, and fwiw, as a radical nonconsumerist, I think Poverty is a much abused word, indicating MATERIALIST worldview.
