Pair a good matrix instance with a good client and you’re golden.

What client would you consider good, then? I’ve liked element so far but I’m always happy to try something new

It’s really pretty, I might try this on my pc. I mostly use matrix from my phone tho, and I didn’t spot any native support for that so I can’t actually switch.

Their website and roadmap didn’t mention it, do you know if they support video calls?

You can use Fluffy Chat on mobile and Cinny on desktop. There is Jitsi chat integration though I’m not very familiar with the calling functionality personally. They both support emote/sticker packs like Discord does.

Yeah definitely gotta switch the last two.

Element is open source and can be reviewed.

Matrix.org uses custom proprietary code, has premium accounts and censors strictly.

There are no clients other than element which have proper support for element-call which i cant really live without. As soon as another client implements that tho, i might switch.

That is using the legacy call system or even a custom system and definitely not element-call. Its not compatible with element or element-x and doesnt support large calls.

Large group calls are an absolute must if you want anyone to adopt your protocol. Element call is fucking amazing. The performance is really good client and server side. You can easily do calls with 100 people, it has proper screensharing and muting support and works as a accountless standalone web app too.
