A general strike? Protests? Before this election I would have agreed with you. Now… half or more of the workers you’d need to pull that off voted for Trump.

A general strike right now would basically just be leftists self-blacklisting themselves and doing the fascists work for them.

If there’s anything this election has shown, it’s that there’s no unity on the left. Who are we organizing with since it’s clear that the cultists are a lost cause and the left can’t be relied on to show up when it matters most?

It would have maybe been mobilizing if the election was closer, or if the Dems at least won the popular vote by 5 million again… but this defeat was thorough enough to absolutely crush the morale of anyone who leans even a little bit left. Why should I waste my time and money supporting progressive policies when some people won’t even do the bare minimum to prevent Republicans from establishing a stranglehold on our government and institutions?

If the accelerationists thought that sitting out and handing the election to Trump was going to mobilize the left I’m afraid they’re going to be disappointed. You say there’s still time, but is there? I used to think the “Trump is a fascist” rhetoric was hyperbole until J6 happened, now the proof is on video. Just engaging with these posts on a leftist site could be getting me onto a McCarthy-style blacklist that would prevent me from getting a job.

There’s also a chance that the DNC still won’t get the message and we will do it all again in 2026, 2028, and so on. I guess beatings will continue until morale improves.

I was a naysayer in 2020, I thought the DNC was repeating the mistakes of 2016 by putting up a moderate but I was wrong.

I was practically giddy when I heard that the FTC was finally going after these corporations.

I was thinking that there’s no way they can blame the Dems for what happens in the next two years, but I’m guessing the post-reality anti-facts crew will find a way.

I didn’t realize a wealth tax, 25k credit for first time home buyers, support for legalized cannabis, support for trans people, etc were Republican policies.

Are there more things on my progressive checklist? Yes, definitely. Universal healthcare, for one.

Part of being an adult is not being able to get everything you want when you want it.

Part of politics in the US is understanding that some of those things that Harris supported which resulted in a candidate that was not far left enough to get progressives off the couch, are too far left for other voters.

I don’t envy whoever is picking up the pieces at the DNC and trying to determine what the precise amount of leftism is that will get those 10-15 million leftists off the couch without alienating the 60-70 million that did show up.

This is especially true for the Palestine issue. How many of those 10-15 million watching from the sidelines would have shown up for a pro-Palestine candidate? Even if it was 10 million, there would still have been more who would sit this one out or vote Trump, because they’d believe the bullshit that the Palestinians are all terrorists. I truly wish it wasn’t the case, but I fear the post-911 Islamophobia and the imperialist attitudes about support for Israel would have cost a pro-Palestine candidate more votes than they would have gained.

The whole “Democrats are to blame” thing just seems like a continuation of the media bullshit that we saw through the entire campaign.

Harris was expected to be perfect, but Trump got a pass from the media because everyone already knew he was a shit show and was numb to it. 70+ million people voted for him, even after seeing exactly what he was like for four years and even after he ran an even nastier campaign than last time.

Am I the only one calling bullshit? Trump voters are to blame for Trump, first and foremost. Could the DNC have done better? Sure, but the armchair generals on Lemmy are making it sound like they have all the answers and if they were in charge at the DNC, surely they would have been able to run a campaign that could have beaten Trump.

Clearly it’s not that easy folks, Trump and the current anti-facts movement in the US are a huge problem that does not have an easy solution.

Oh wait, it did… the solution was to unite behind an imperfect candidate like we did in 2020, this time with a younger, better spoken and arguably more exciting candidate.

I keep hearing about grocery prices, but no one has any explanation of what Biden was supposed to do about it that he wasn’t already doing, or how Trump will handle it better.

If putting a Republican administration in place that will bend over for corporations causes lower grocery prices, doesn’t that just prove that corporate greed was the main driver all along? Why can’t people who voted Trump for these reasons understand that?

If voters keep voting like this, corporations are just going to purposely raise prices whenever someone they don’t like is in power, and the sheep will just fall for it and we’ll never be able to hold these corporations accountable.

MA had a ballot initiative that would have gradually brought the minimum tipped wage in line with the state’s minimum wage over the next 5 years or something.

Restaurants posted signs at their door to vote NO and that 90 percent of tipped workers opposed the bill.

A bartender I know told me that I should vote no because if it passed then restaurants would have to reduce headcount and servers who were bad at their jobs would get paid just as well as servers that offer good service.

So it seems like the restaurants just threatened people with losing their jobs and so they voted NO and convinced others to do the same.

The measure didn’t pass.

I’m not thrilled with the DNC either, but I’m not buying this whole idea that they are shooting themselves in the foot on purpose. The DNC does better when they win elections.

In previous elections, the candidate that raised the most money was more likely to win. Also, a moderate Democrat won the last election. They made the decisions they made in this election cycle because they thought it was their best chance of winning.

I don’t have access to the data that they have to determine whether the leftist that Lemmy wants on the ticket could actually win the general.

I’d certainly like to believe that it’s just that simple and all the DNC needs to do is put up a pro-Palestine Democratic Socialist and the election is in the bag… I just don’t know if that’s the reality on the ground. If that is not the reality on the ground, are the leftists that stayed home still committed to their protest? Or is there a point at which they would admit that we haven’t had a true leftist on the ticket because a true leftist is not viable?

I hope someone can put together some clear data to answer that question soon… I’m afraid that a pro-Palestine Socialist will get crushed by AIPAC funded attack ads about Marxism and supporting terrorism that will really stick with moderates, and that no matter how energized the base is it wouldn’t be enough to win the general.

Don’t worry I’m sure the billionaire convicted fraudster who hasn’t divested from his NYC real estate will reduce your NYC rent prices. He would never use the presidency to enrich himself and his businesses. What was that about a bubble of ignorance?

The Dems have had control of the government for exactly 2 years since 1980. I don’t understand how anyone can blame the Dems for the state our country is in.

The silver lining in all this is that now that Republicans have complete control, it will be impossible for shills and cultists to blame the Dems.

I don’t mind progressives staying home in 2016 to send the message to the DNC that a more progressive candidate was needed.

What I have a problem with is those same progressives showing up for Biden in record numbers in 2020, which sends a conflicting message to the DNC that you do need to put up a white moderate against Trump, and then staying home in 2024 when another moderate is on the ticket.

I hear you Bernie bros, I wish Bernie had been on the ticket in 2016 as well, but we’ll never know whether he would have beat Trump in the general. I would have rather given Trump four more years in 2020, then have to still deal with him now.

If he had just won in 2020, then we wouldn’t have had a violent insurrection that WILL happen again because it was validated by re-electing this guy and failing to hold him accountable.

Now it’s both totally unclear whether a progressive candidate could actually win in the general, and we have to deal with Trump until 2028. If the Democrats put up a progressive candidate like an AOC for 2028 and still lose… Then we’re completely fucked and would have to swing moderate again in 2032… would progressives still stay home out of protest if it’s shown that progressive policies are unpopular in the general election? Or would progressives finally agree to get behind a moderate candidate?

To be clear, I hope the Democratic primaries for 2028 do yield a more progressive candidate, and that they do win the general, but this is a really dangerous gamble. I hope the nation, world and vulnerable groups can hang on while we see if it will pay off.

The worst thing about Trump by far is his refusal to accept a peaceful transition of power. It’s a national tragedy that he will never be held accountable for that, and that his behavior has been validated by winning another election.

Dealer lied to me to get the sale in multiple ways, saying that the head gasket issue was fixed (it was, but not for the car they were selling me) and told me that the transmission fluid was not supposed to ever be changed (it was, and not changing it is probably why the transmission failed). Bunch of scammer scumbags, my next car will NOT be purchased from a dealer. If their business model requires a state law forcing them into the middle of a transaction, they’re parasites.

I’d donate to Trump by buying a Tesla before I’d purchase a car from a dealership again.
