You might want to switch to a PieFed instance while you are at it. It’s the same content, but with a LOT more features: polls, flairs, feeds (=multireddits), comments federate instead of just posts, you can get notifications for every post in a quiet comm if you so wish, etc.

I get my laptops from a city bureau.

They sell old laptops of Helsinki public servants. The hard drives are very thoroughly emptied and Ubuntu is installed. It’s a kind of a workshop for unemployed people, with the purpose of keeping them used to the concept of work. They get a tiny bit of extra money atop their unemployment benefit by working there.

This has all kinds of weird side effects, like how the actual buying process runs. Once you’ve decided what you want to buy, they print something akin to a receipt to you, and you need to walk some 100 metres or so to a wood workshop where they have a worker with a permission to handle money. You give them the receipt and money, and they give you back a other receipt to prove you have paid. And then you take that back to the shack made of corrugated metal that works as the computer shop, give the receipt to the guy there and carry your laptop home.

At one point they were selling old laptops of the.fire brigade. They were built so that you could very well use them as a hammer 🐳

Anyway, the shop is on the backyard of the Kyläsaari recycling centre in Helsinki. It closes at 15, so.it’s a little bit difficult to visit if you’ve got an eight to four job.

If you say that genociding Uyghurs is not okay, the lemmy.ml admins consider that to trigger the rule about colonialist mindset. PieFed has more features and can do everything Lemmy can. There are many things you can do in Reddit but not on Lemmy, but most of those are possible on PieFed.

A user migrating to PieFed is more likely to stay than a user migrating to Lemmy, because they won’t have a feeling that there are familiar features lacking. You don’t have flairs, multireddits (a.k.a. feeds), polls, events, personal notes on users, or notifications on new posts/comments on Lemmy, but on PieFed you do.

PieFed is a different software. Lemmy is written in Rust and has a certain set of features.

PieFed is a newer project, written from scratch in Python, by completely different people. It includes Lemmy’s features and shows the same posts as Lemmy, but has additional features such as polls, events, feeds (which are the same thing as multireddits on Reddit), emoji reactions, flairs, notifications for new comments coming for some specific post or new posts coming in some specific community, messaging with Mastodon users, and some other stuff that fails to come to my mind right now :)
