You guys have ads?
I was gonna say, no fucking way would I touch an app with ads, that’s why I’m here in the first place.
I know right! That’s genuinely the whole damn point of the fediverse - freedom from being exploited and monetised.
I’d never subject myself to ads on Lemmy, no matter how good the client is.
For this freedom we do of course rely on the generosity of those who pay the server bills, for which I’m eternally grateful.
I left Reddit for this app. I paid to remove ads once 10 years ago and I don’t mind doing it again tbh.
Imagine using an app with ads for a free platform
Switch to Voyager, it has no trackers or ads. Also has a dark theme which is a must in my book.
Eh, I’ve been using Sync since Reddit, and I’m used to its interface. The developer added ads when he adapted if for Lemmy, and honestly, it’s fine. It’s a single man dev team, and I’ve been using his product for free for years. If he’s decided he wants to make a couple of bucks for his labor, fine.
It also has a dark mode, but I’ve set it to only turn on with my nightly Do Not Disturb. It also has a couple of other features I like, like a Drafts folder and built-in Ascii emoticons. I don’t know how it stacks up against other apps, but I’m used to it and I’m unlikely to switch. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sorry, that was a lot more peremptory than I meant it to be! Don’t get me wrong, it’s a slick app. If it was just a question if throwing the guy a few bucks I’d do it in a heartbeat, I too believe in paying for good software. But the trackers are my real problem. This app doesn’t need to know my location, who I am, what I read, who I message, which links I go to, etc etc. I’m not sure if all that in Sync is required for the ads, or if they use it for more too, but they could use it for more, and anyway like others have said we’re some of us here at least in part to get away from that kind of surveillance.
You might go back to Sync, but it’s definitely worth your while checking out other apps that don’t track you if you care about that at all. If not, of course, then none of the above applies haha 😅
Well, I’ve deleted my Ad ID on Android. My understanding is that should make it pretty difficult for advertisers to collect much data on me from any app.
“marketers hate this simple trick”
as a developer i can assure you they have plenty other means to collect your data. the ad id is only for displaying targeted ads, but the spying goes on
Then purchase the app? Surely there is a paid version without ads? I cannot understand how someone takes ads for granted, it’s just an eye sore
Because they’re not obtrusive, so I don’t give a shit. I use uBlock Origin on Firefox because most websites are practically unreadable without it these days, but I hardly notice them on Sync. There’s one ad in my feed for about every 10 posts and one small banner ad on each comment section, and half the time they don’t even load. I only have moral objections to ads if they’re invading your privacy or pretending to be content, but these aren’t fake posts and I’m fairly certain that can’t get any significant data on me since I disable Ad ID on my devices.
I could pay $17 bucks a year to get rid of them. (I often tell myself I’m going to do that to support the dev, but then I forget to follow through.) But sometimes it’s less effort to just ignore ads than get rid of them. Like, I could close my eyes and plug my ears every time an ad comes on TV, but it’s easier to just not pay attention.
You can pay a one off fee to get rid of the apps too.
Also thunder, eternity. I’m going to try out Interstellar too, which is new to f-droid.
I’ll check out all three of those, thanks!
Boost is pretty nice imo. It leaves me with no desire to seek something better.
That seems like a safety failure for a door handle. Maybe change the handles to something that can be opened when someone does this to you?
You could kill everyone in aa building by placing 2x4s under each handle and lighting the place on fire.
Crazy design flaw.
They said they had to call maintenance, so it’s probably an apartment and they can’t just change the handles.
Or, just use the key to open it from the inside without using the handle?
Now that I think about it, why would an entrance door ever have a handle outside? Is this an American thing?
I’ve seen this design in Canada as well, it’s horrible. That outside knob literally has to turn down for the door to open, and it’s connected to the inside… no independent turning.
Like wtf eh?
window
Sorry, they only use Linux
TIL don’t use sync
Sync for reddit was good, but then with lemmy it enshittified
Now I use Connect
Is that android only? Can’t seem to find it on iOS
I guess someone missed the memo that door handles can turn the other way too huh? 😂
I guess you don’t have a whole lot of experience with the delightful variety of door equipment available the world over. Not all handles of this style can go up as well as down.
Well if that’s so, that’s unfortunate. I’ve worked on a many of them, and part of the troubleshooting procedure is to make sure they open either way you turn them.
Oh, dude, troubleshooting is a surprisingly rare skill! But yeah I’ve encountered plenty of lever handles that only turn the one way, even a few that were installed “backwards” so they would only lift up.
I agree that all lever handles should be able to go up as well as down, it’s just a sensible feature, but I’ve encountered it enough that I imagine there are a lot of older designs without it still being manufactured.
I’ve literally never seen that feature, with the exception of the one time a handle was installed upside down and could only turn the other way. You’re making a lot of assumptions about the rest of the world here
As far as I know, that’s a requirement here for sake of fire safety, especially in facilities that only have one door to exit such as hotel rooms and many apartments.
After many years of use in one direction, it’ll wear out a bushing inside and eventually stop opening one way until repaired or replaced. Being able to open by turning either way gives a backup way to open it in a pinch.
The way they’re designed, it seems about stupid to not have them open either way. Every search result for ‘doorknob only turns one way’ takes me to a repair tutorial.
I’m not doubting you, I haven’t worked on every model doorknob and lock out there, but if there really are doorknobs out there that only turn in one direction by design, then the engineers that designed it are stupid and don’t have your safety in mind.
