This trend of just adding 50-100% to the price of what actually expensive things cost (so you can bitch about it or chide people for paying it) is annoying.
Bro these stupid burger places charge $27 for a shitty burger!
No they don’t. They charge $15 for one, and it’s probably a great burger. Just go to McDonald’s and find something to whine about there too.
Why do I say this? I live in an expensive place and I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a bloody Mary cost more than $14, and to be clear that’s ridiculously expensive. $10-12 would be normal.
Bars charging $20-30 for a single cocktail and $10-15 for a bottle of Bud Light is one of the reasons I don’t go to bars and McDonald’s charges $15 out here just for a quarter pounder, which is about the same as a regular sit-down restaurant burger that also has better quality.
Except there’s very little truth to this. My city is toward the top of list of most expensive places to live and I don’t pay more than maybe $16 for a cocktail. More likely $12.
Paris is not nearly one of the most expensive cities. For a huge cultural capital it’s really quite affordable. Try Zurich or San Francisco or Singapore.
20 dollars is about 16 CHF, that’s an extremely normal price for a cocktail. I live just outside Zurich, I’m not exaggerating for comedic or dramatic effect. In a fancy bar in district 1 or niederdorf it’s more like 25 CHF or 30 USD.
Just a random selection of a few bars in downtown:
Okay, so you realize that Zurich is like number two most expensive city in the world? And the prices you cite are still barely on par with this $25 claim which is heavily implied to be common in the post? This post may as well say that any hipster bar charges that much, which is absolutely not a thing for like 99% of the planet. I live in an expensive city and never rarely pay more than like $14 for a drink. Under $10 isn’t even that hard to find…
Zurich, jesus. May as well just hand someone a 100 euro note when you walk out of your door and be done with it, even if you don’t plan on spending anything.

You’re doing the exact thing I’m criticizing.
“It runs on my machine, so the bug clearly doesn’t exist.”
I was recently in Paris too. Apparently it works on their machine as well.

I mean I’ve been to Zurich and Iceland pretty recently and they were hella expensive but still likely less than $20 for a bloody Mary.
