‘The Robert Herridge Theater’ was a half-hour dramatic anthology produced by Robert Herridge, that ran in syndication circa 1959-1960. But the episode ‘The Sound of Miles Davis’ was a concert by Davis, John Coltrane, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Cobb, and the Gil Evans Orchestra, and aired July 21, 1960.
Excellent, wonderful recording. I have an instinct to download this video lest it disappears again from my life.
Apparently there’s a full recording of the ‘The Sound of Miles Davis’ episode, which should be 26 minutes long. I only learned of this after posting, upon deciding to search for what ‘The Robert Herridge Theater’ is.
Edit: here’s one upload, but with poor video quality and out of sync. The full episode has three more compositions, with a small orchestra:
- Dave Brubeck’s ‘The Duke’
- Gil Evans’ ‘Blues for Pablo’
- Ahmad Jamal’s ‘New Rhumba’
