Not sure what this means for AEW, given Netflix’s deal with WWE.
Not sure what this means for AEW
It means another 6mo of Meltzer/Alvarez talking out of their arses and making the IWC think its simultaneously the best move for the company & the downfall of pro wrestling and entertainment as a whole lmao
“well uh you know uh well you know well uh well you know we’ll just have to wait and see…look uh look you know it’s not like the streaming numbers for WWE are good, they’re not you know, uh and maybe…look maybe Netflix will want to corner the wrestling market and uh you know uh well maybe they’ll be happy with both.”
“Dave, do you seriously think WWE is going to allow netflix to also streaming AEW? come on Dave DAVE COME ON LISTEN TO ME!”
“look well uh look you know we’ll just have to wait and see”
Expect some bullshit shenanigans on this one, Paramount was already meeting with the President about how to carve up CNN and Ellison has already been in Washington DC whining to the White House and Congress about not winning WBD since Wednesday. A spokesperson from the White House this morning has said they view this deal with heavy skepticism…
Anyway long story short, Ellison is using Political power to try and stop this.
Nobody bidding for WBD was a good choice, they all have their problems, at least in this situation TNT/TBS stay around, for now. I imagine they are still for sale though.
According to the press release as quoted by Fightful, they are just acquiring Warner Bros, not Discovery. So the split plan will go forward, just with the WB half (including HBO Max) joining Netflix, while Discovery (including TBS/TNT) will not. So at the very least, AEW will still have a cable home (unless Paramount acquires Discovery or something).
Probably going along with the original plan which was to split WB and Discovery, WB gets all the content and functional stuff and Discovery gets saddled with WB’s debt, sold off and folded, except now they’ll probably find a way to transfer some of Netflix’s debts to it as part of the deal to make those disappear too.
Isn’t late stage capitalism fun?

As long as they don’t dissolve WBD, I don’t see the issue.
Just all the money goes to Netflix but AEW stays on hbo max.
So, does this mean the inevitable march to oligopoly could lead back to there being fewer streaming services that actually have content again?
They are apparently going to maintain HBO Max as a separate service, but plan to add some HBO content to Netflix. So not really.
Can’t wait for TKO to throw a fit and get AEW removed from Max
From what I understand, WWE has very little leverage with Netflix at this point. They’ve been severely underperforming since the move.
Netflix might do something to AEW if they’re contractually obligated to, but I don’t know if they’d be interested in otherwise going out of their way to make WWE happy.
