If only they moved to something that isn’t VC-backed with a heavily right-leaning founder at its helm…

This articles criticisms are valid but I feel like some some points could be covered with better nuance which would only reinforce their main criticisms.

Like, “group think” is not a federation problem it’s a social media and people problem, IMO. So making that an issue with federation feels like strawmanning an argument. It’s like saying to a member of a minority group, why don’t you go to the supremacists bars to have a conversation with them to avoid the group thinking, maybe you’ll learn why you should be inferior. Like no one is going to do that, we go to places we find welcoming with people we vibe with.

Also it makes it seem like P2P protocols are perfect but they would also have the same issues with banning nefarious actors, and you can get doxxed if you’re not careful or hiding your IP address.

It almost feels like an ad for Simplex

That’s fair. They do highlight some issues with matrix. And honest fair criticism is the only way it’ll become better.

No, because Lemmy is a public forum and it’s fundamentally not a platform for privacy. The author is mostly complaining about the nature of how any public forums work in general there. I also don’t see a fundamental problem with censorship, the reality is that it’s a necessary tool for ensuring any community can function. Every community and every society has some level of censorship because some ideas are accepted to be harmful. For example, censorship of people promoting fascism, paedophilia, racism, sexism and so on is a good and necessary thing. People who advocate for libertarian free market of ideas are not serious.

The rant about voting is also nonsensical since it is configurable by server admins. For example, hexbear disables downvotes, but clearly users actually prefer having a voting system and that’s why servers end up enabling it in one form or another.
