I think it’s because my age puts me right at the boundary of understanding the joke: I am too young to have much first-hand experience with IRC (except in the last couple of years, in niche scenarios), but I am old enough to have a passing familiarity with aspects of old web culture like this (even if though they predate my online existence somewhat)
