Is ReVanced and uBlock are a very secret thing? Why do people look for the VPN alternative, i dont get it.

If it’s Linux: get an Android container to run SmartTube
Otherwise: there are patches for the webviews on things like this sometimes (see: WebOS homebrew launcher). Or just get something that is one of the above.

It turns out that this is a question.
From my limited testing I did just now I did not get any ads on the official YT app, usually it’s 2 per video at least.
No idea on the Albanian law part, but ad stacks can have tiny demand in certain GEOs, and western advertisers don’t want to pay for impressions there so they geo block them.
I use a VPN and depending on which country I’m using, my podcasts don’t have ads either.
Nothing is more satisfying than blocking or ignoring ads. Fuck you capitalists!

I don’t know what you get with Firefox mobile and extensions. Do you also get autoskip sponsors, background play, hide shorts etc?

Cant do that on devices that arent running browsers, or browsers capable of extensions/add-ons. Like games consoles…my xbox would be the only device on my network relying on a VPN for this and other things that my pi-hole cant block.

I have never bought native brand products specifically because the ads were all over the place and obnoxious. It created a negative association with the brand. The ads literally convinced me to do exactly the opposite of what it wanted.
You know what the last ad I cared about was? Cowboys herding cats. No idea what it was for, just a hysterical idea executed with absurd dedication to the bit.

Oh damn, this seems to work. When I’m on my phone I typically use YouTube on Firefox with ublock origin and that works, but I also have the YouTube app which has ads on almost every video. I connected to Albania with NordVPN and watched a few ad-free videos on the YouTube app.
Look into ReVanced for Android or YouTube Plus for iOS. They’re nodded clients with built in adblocker and sponsorblock, including more QoL features. I haven’t seen and ad in months
ReVanced has been iffy since they got too popular through reddit, but I use grayjay which is FOSS and I really like it. It’s still in development but have to support the work they’re doing !

Maybe it changed but I only had crashes and version problems due to the spike in popularity. There were app takedowns and I had a less reliable experience so I switched.
I have not had many issues. Only on my old phone with a lineage OS ROM without google. On my current phone no real issues. I did only update it like every half year if even that. Most of the issues I got were from running a really old version of the app.
And mind you I have been a user ever since YT Vanced still existed. I even used the last vamced version untill it stopped working.

How does this differ from just using an ad blocker though?
One thing that comes to mind is that if you’re on iOS you unfortunately can’t really run an adblocker on YouTube (sans running it in browser I guess), but you can easily use a VPN.
Also YouTube periodically tries to break adblocking. 99% of the time uBlock origin works, but this could be a backup if they ever succeed.
Oh and non-Android Smart TVs often don’t have ad free YT apps available either. You can run those behind a VPN too.

You can. It’s called Opera browser. Yea they data mine you but you can even get background play. I know I blasting one of my secret alternatives to giving youtube my money but hey share the love.
I already mentioned the browser option and you can also use Orion for that. It’s not as nice to use as the app (though background play is obviously an advantage)
