Homeland Security officials have urged disaster response staff at the Federal Emergency Management Agency to avoid using the word “ice” in public messaging about the massive winter storm barreling toward much of the United States, according to two sources familiar with the directive.
Rock salt is great for dispersing ice from streets and sidewalks.

Rocks or salt. Rocks because they hurt, and salt because it kills them by dehydrating them through osmosis, drawing water out of their bodies

Also unrelated, but wet clothes can be hundreds of times less insulating than dry clothes, so stay dry in the winter storm!
