I don’t think they were white moderates. Just selifish people who supported the status quo because their “sponsors” have asked them to do so if they wanted to stay in their seats. So just people trying to cling to their power and influence.
That is what I mean. The “white moderates” that MLK wrote about. Folks who agree with a movement’s goals, but ultimately fail it out of their own selfish reasons for keeping the status quo.
I believe they would have no qualms about joining the republican party and agreeing with their goals if that was the only way to keep their seats. They might feel a tad closer to the democratic party but more in the sense of “I prefer wine over beer”.
