What is that strange variant of the Canadian flag they’re using? Red on left side only, white arrow into the left side and no right side red?
My store uses a similar tag. It points to the price of the product on the shelf to indicate the product is “Canadian.”
If you look to the right of the board, you can see the tag tucked into the shelf.

I visited Burlington, VT for my annual Christmas getaway.
It was very obviously below usual occupation. The businesses we visited definitely were aware of the lack of Canadians.

Uhh Safeway’s headquarters are here in California. It’s publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Act on this information in accordance to your preference.
Safeway (also referred to as Canada Safeway) is a Canadian supermarket chain that operates 135 full-service locations, mostly in the country’s Western provinces. It was established in 1929 as a subsidiary of the American Safeway chain before being sold in 2013 to Sobeys, a division of the conglomerate Empire Company and Canada’s second-largest supermarket chain. Though independent from the American company, it continues to use the Safeway name and logo as of April 2025.
What about ownership? 100% Canadian ingredients and labour while everyone in the chain is exploited so a US billionaire can profit isn’t any more enticing.
That would be the situation of De Ruijter in the Netherlands. It’s a “Koninklijke” (royal-approved) company, but the company’s ultimately owned by Americans. Which imho doesn’t make it very koninklijk!
Isn’t Safeway a US firm at it’s root?
I may be wrong. Safeway largely evaporated as a brand in the UK. Shame, I used to quite enjoy working there, good craic.
Safeway assets in Canada were bought out by Sobeys which is a Canadian company.
Europe need this.
