Yes. Xi Jinping has been terrible for freedoms compared to the Hu Jintao or Jiang Zemin’a time serving. Arts and personal freedoms peaked during the early 2000s era.
Just technology levels alone ensure that’s true. The world’s smaller. People are easier to monitor. Easier to track. Easier to surveil. We’re all less free from that alone. Not even mentioning any of the other possibilities.
Perhaps the Uyghurs have an opinion on the matter.
