The native species was driven to extinction by sailors in the 1800s. Now, 158 juvenile giant tortoises have been reintroduced to the island.

    You can visit parts of the restoration on Santa Cruz island. Rats if I remember were an invasive species who tended to burrow into turtle eggs. But it seems like the islands solved that problem too. Turtle power!
