As I understood it, they clarified that we’re not allowed to call for violence and stuff like that. The manifesto itself is fine.

They locked the news post entirely because some comments weren’t bootlicking. My comment was removed for saying “can’t imagine why that happened” which neither “calls for nor celebrates violence” as the mod stated, the latter “celebrating” being his or her invention to broaden the scope of the censoring of comments outside the stated server and community rules.

I’m current researching alternatives and have no idea where to go. I’m pretty drained after a year on Lemmy trying to make this work. I’d look at mastodon but seems like it’s more Twitter than longer form discussion and boards.

Even when dealing with bullshit like this, trying to “rules lawyer” online when a moderation group has made their stance known loud and clear rarely works out well.

Also, just in the rare case you didn’t know, Lemmy is more than just .world. It’s not like Reddit where you’re just stuck with the Reddit admins.

You could register an account on any instance you want. The overwhelming majority of them would still allow you to interact with content from .world, but the worst the .world admins could do would be to ban you from a .world version of a “subreddit”.

I’ve been very happy with the admin of lemmy.dbzer0.com, a former mod (I think former head mod) of the piracy subreddit that resigned with the API mess. Doesn’t seem to take action lightly or capriciously, content to let the community make decisions through open discussion and polls rather than just iron fist their wishes through.

Former head mod or piracy. I built it from the ground-up in fact. Didn’t resign. Got admin-removed (potentially coup-ed) because I blacked out the sub and pushed very actively towards a lemmy migration (which is why /c/piracy is thriving)

Also former top mod of /r/anarchism (x2) but I demoted myself voluntarily (x2) when I got asked nicely :D

If you otherwise like lemmy I’d recommend dbzer0 or lemm.ee. Both are kinda large instances which ideally would be avoided, but both of them are also very fair with moderation and don’t defederate from many places, which means you can decide whether or not to block one on your own. I also have heard decent stuff about .zip, so that might be worth checking out.

It does suck how many communities ended up centralized on .world, but a lot of the news related ones that are the most susceptible to over-moderation have fairly active alternatives on other instances.

Thanks; a few dbzero recommendations in addition to your own so maybe I’ll give that a go. I was aware of the structure of Lemmy and it’s options of server choice but like many, I started on .world as I assumed being the biggest fish in a small pond would at least yield the most content and users (which was the beauty of reddit) we can all agree content and participation is still a struggle even on .world so I haven’t tried other instances. I’ll at least try that before moving on.

Content and participation is the same on other instances, you can access the same communities than on LW. You can simply export and import your subscriptions lists from the settings

Dbzer0 is where I went and after seeing all the content I wasn’t seeing because world had defederated, I’m really enjoying myself.

Whether or not that’s exactly what happened, that’s a moderator action, not an admin action, and if you disagree with it, you can just join or start a different news community without stressing about moving your account to another instance (which isn’t a huge hassle anyway - if you use the settings import/export tool, all your subscriptions etc. can come with you).
