I’m new here and still grasping the way the fediverse works.

Is this basically saying 3 user accounts were made for the mass downvoting or what’s happening?

Servers, not users. Though each server would have users.

Although I don’t think they’re bots like the post is implying. OP just spends a lot of time annoying them.

      Little bit more.

Someone made 3 servers, then a bunch of accounts on those servers, then used all of those accounts to downvote.

Allegedly because I ain’t got the time to manually verify that myself.

Instances are more like servers or domains. Your instance is lemmy.world. We can see votes from individual users because votes federate across instances, (like if you, on lemmy.world, were to vote on my instance, lemmy.dbzer0).

In order for that federation to happen, the votes must be public. This prevents a rogue instance from just lying and telling other instances “yeah all my shit is super upvoted” and pushing itself to the top, or inversely pushing others down by spoofing downvotes. It also allows instances to properly block banned users; If I’m banned from a community/instance, my individual votes shouldn’t count towards it. So anyone with the know-how can inspect which individual users have voted on posts, and how they have voted.

Someone spun up three entire instances and mass created dozens of accounts on each, just to mass downvote. It’s just blatant vote manipulation, and is why the admin stepped in to defederate (stop sending info back and forth) from the rogue instances.

You see stuff like that occasionally from the “tankie triad” instances, (lemmy.ml, hexbear.net, and lemmygrad) but they’re usually more subtle about it to avoid instantly getting defederated.

I’ve just had .ml blocked for a long time and life’s been good. I would prefer defederation. If put democratically, I’m sure that’s what would be voted for as well.

I’d say about 70% of my comments have exactly 1 or 2 downvotes. Just the other day I said “lmao, nice” on a post about the IRS open-sourcing tax software and it got a downvote.

Not a tankie, but maybe people just downvote that kind of low effort spam.

You’re a prolific poster. It’s possible they just recognize your username and vote based on their opinion of you alone, without reading each post.

That’s likely what’s at work with these things. I even got a few chronic haters that downvote just about everything I write, even when it’s calling out racism. They’ll downvote criticism of Nazis in the effort, even.

Yea no, he’s not. Anybody who starts becoming a thorn in the side of Lemmy tankies starts having perfectly innocuous posts and comments getting downvoted

You’re literally on a post about Tankies making three whole instances full of fake users to mass downvote me because I speak out and collect evidence against them

And there are so many others before me with similar stories.

Everytime I checked downvotes on anyone’s posts, they came from .world. And the instances referenced were here before .world, since the admins are the ones who, checks notes, created Lemmy.

I’ve seen admins claim a handful of users/ipaddresses are responsible for 90% of all downvotes and it was not World.

Although, World is a very active and popular instance for being vanilla but also defederating from Hex and Grad.

Man never give that up. I left a WFH job in IT that I wasn’t really happy with, but it was fine. Left to a company where everything was better on paper. Now I work 50 hour weeks on average as salary, and don’t have time to even use my benefits that actively are better.

        Never give it up. Neverrrrrrrr.

Maybe look inti teaching programming. It doesn’t pay as much, but it’s very rewarding. Doesn’t have to be with a university or something. For example, I teach springboot at a private institute. We have bootcamps, but also full, accreditted bachelors. I get to talk about talk about programming a lot, share my knowledge, expand my knowledge, give fun extracurricular talks every once in a while, write new coursework, write fun exercises. Maybe there’s something like that near you

You programming guys are way smarter than me. Tech writing wouldn’t be a bad pivot, but I’m a little worried companies will think genAI will do that work just as well as a writer. I’m actually looking at a pivot to HR, since I like the kind of people focused work and market research stuff they do.

I appreciate your thoughtfulness though. It’s very kind of you to take time out and try to assist a stranger. 🙂
