      Yup.

It’s balkanization for the Un-united States.

      Cool experiment while it lasted.

Cool, maybe we’ll stop giving charity to all the red states then. NY can be self sufficient. Shit hole red states can’t.

“He’s a radical left lunatic,” Trump said.

Says the radical fascist lunatic. Projection is omnipresent in this new Nazi Führer Cult party.

    That’s called fascism.

Time for the wealthy blue states to break away.

You don’t bite the hand that feeds.

As a New Yorker I would like to see that orange fascist try. I can almost guarantee that if Zohran organizes a workers militia today itll have tens of thousands of volunteers tomorrow. I myself would happily throw arms with federal pigs.

Yanking funding from state and local agencies is almost trivial, thanks to the DOGE infestation of the US Treasury. Quite literally a matter of button-clicks.

The dream of the Unitary Executive under Bush, has finally been realized under Trump 2. Congress simply could not stop handing the Executive branch more and more authority, both implicit and explicit, until now they’re effectively superfluous.

The one upside is that - given the state of Trump’s BBLB - there may not be much funding left to pull from NYC by the time they’re done gutting the domestic budget.

The executive has so much power because the Republicans in congress are his complete bitches. And they are in charge.

Trump governed under a Dem Majority from 2019-21. He may well get another Dem Majority in '27, given his abysmal approval numbers.

Nevermind how many times I’ve had to hear “You need 60 votes in the Senate to do anything” under Biden and Obama. Seems it is always the Republicans fault, whether bills are obstructed or flying to the president’s desk with a simple majority.

They bring in more taxes than they spend, “cutting them off” will only benefit them as long as they are smart enough to keep the revenue in state.

So, NYC gets about $100B in federal funds annually. I wonder how much they pay in taxes to the federal government. I’d bet they pay more than they get.

The problem is that federal income taxes are generally paid directly by employers to the federal government. It’s not clear by what mechanism states and/or cities might withhold them.

It’s true that the State of New York, and NYC are both large employers, so hypothetically I guess they could refuse to collect income taxes from their employees on behalf of the federal government, but certainly the IRS would still hold the individual taxpayers responsible for those taxes at the end of the year.

If it gets to the point where the States are withholding money from the federal government, I’d wager it’s because they no longer view the federal government as legitimate. I guess, good luck to the IRS trying to collect?

What would stop the IRS from sending federal agents arresting people on the streets? We’ve already seen ICE doing it without badges, uniforms, or warrants

This is the problem with a dictatorship. They have too much power. They can do whatever they want

The state is a pretty big employer, so that portion might be held back for a while. That would still have to be paid by the end of the year, though.
