I’m about a third of the way through the first book. The primary mysteries (what the hell is up with this crazy planet, and what the hell as these “demons”) has not been resolved. The escapism is great, but the writing is mediocre. So I’m wondering if anyone has an opinion.

I’ll probably finish the first book either way, but unsure if I should be sale hunting for the rest of the series.

Finished the first one. There are moments of good buried in a lot of “merely okayish”. It has a little bit of a “Hunger Games” feel to it in that way – chosen one against the oppressive patriarchy – but combined with military power armour fan-fiction or something. I stopped after the first book.

But if you want a rec:

Currently reading Embers of War by Powell. It’s much better milSF in my opinion. The prologue opens with a war-ending Ender’s Game style genocide, told in a few pages. Then it time jobs to post-war peacetime and most of the characters (including the sentient ship) are ex-soldiers coming to terms with it.
