I’ve been an IT professional for nearly 30 years and it seems like every new version of Windows they do everything they can to make me feel like an idiot who has never used a computer before. Simple things like turning off the computer isn’t intuitive. I only use Windows at work now, my personal computers are all either linux or MacOS… and I just installed linux on my old 2012 Macbook and ‘it just (mostly) works’.
“linux is too complicated”
The worst part of this is that it’s no longer true. Windows is WAY more complicated than Linux (can be) at this point.
I feel fortunate that I’m my lifetime “Party Like It’s 1999” went from being about the future, to being exactly what everyone was doing, to being retro.
Napster and Facebook.
He had made Napster very successful and wasn’t afraid to just do whatever he wanted, and he was an early investor and influencer on Facebook. He helped do to our attention what he did to the music industry: exploit it for profit without giving a shit about who is impacted.
What if, instead of having to doomscroll to get that sweet, sweet dopamine hit, you’d just occasionally, and randomly be sent a message with a funny meme, or interesting story, or whatever it takes to convince your brain to hook you up?
Even with an exceptionally well trained team of detectives, getting a 90%+ clearance rate seems very suspicious. It is more likely that rather than having better detectives then than we have now, it’s that the police now have to go up against better science and technology that can help keep innocent people from being convicted. Bank teen the police just needed to take a few pieces of evidence and create a believable story from it, but now they need that story to match DNA, surveillance, and the right size glove.
Cops in the past were still cops. They didn’t care about accurately solving a murder of a poor person, they just wanted to be able to find someone they could punish for it so they could move on to the next thing.
I use Signal the way I want Social Media to be… I share things with specific people who I think will appreciate what I’m sharing, and if I ever want to share something with everyone I chat with on Signal, then I will use Stories. I almost never use Stories because I rarely ever want to share something with everyone, however a few weeks ago I saw that someone I used to work with had posted a Story. He was breaking ground on building his new house. He has spent the past decade living extremely frugally at a campground, saving all of his money toward the goal of building a house, and now he’s begun building. It was EXACTLY the type of thing that I think we could all agree is what Social Media should be for, and since he isn’t on facebook or instagram, he used Signal.
m… mostly?

We have ALWAYS said that Epstein killed himself.

Applies to movies and TV shows as well.
You know what, I’m just going to say it … I’m glad they don’t occupy that same range any longer. Grizzly bears are terrifying and I like being in nature.
I didn’t mean to sound like I was waving it off, the bigger point I was trying to make was that just finding another job can be very difficult. I’m currently stuck in a job that I hate and I’ve been trying for over a year to find something else. One job was a substantial pay cut and I got through several rounds of interviews before being let go and the other was a substantial pay increase and, again, I went through many rounds of interviews and really thought I was about to get an offer when they called and told me they went with someone else. Now I just feel defeated and trying to learn to accept that this is where I am for the time being. Even when you consider the ethics of a situation, sometimes there isn’t really any good options.
Unfortunately, we live under capitalism and that requires a job. Even moreso if you have a family that you need to provide for… so even a shitty job, if it pays well enough, is enough to get you stuck. It isn’t always easy to find another job with similar pay, especially when you have a demanding full-time job.
“It’s a feature, not a bug.”
When he said that DC Studios didn’t have a company style, he’s right. When he explains that it’s so people don’t get bored… That sounds to me like a spin. It’s been clear that DC Studios (and Warner in general) has a leadership issue - they don’t have a vision of anything other than trying to make money. James Gunn has had 3 very successful, and profitable projects for DC so they are going to let him do his thing as long as he remains profitable. For Gunn, it is about making sure the audience doesn’t get bored, so that the studio keeps him around.
And for anyone in the US, just know that State Farm is one of the worst companies for Homeowners Insurance. They will pay the bare minimum. All insurance sucks, but State Farm is on a whole other level of suck. If you are with State Farm don’t make the mistake I made and quickly find another company.
Seriously, leave State Farm. By not leaving I am now paying $20k that they should have covered.
“Hi, I want to introduce you to my mom, my dad, and my Tim.”
for whatever reason
Money. It’s for money.
I think setting up linux as a gaming machine is more advanced than most people would be able to handle right now, but I was referring more to just general computer usage. I was able to install PopOS on a 13 year old MacBook the other day and the most difficult part was getting the iso setup as a bootable USB drive - and even that wasn’t too hard. Although, to be fair, I think anyone who has problems doing an install of linux would also have a problem doing an install of Windows.
