  • Now, as Devil’s Advocate arguing against you and me, Harvard could choose to drop him at the mere hint of an accusation. You don’t have a right to a job and not getting fired without proven cause in any state but I want to say Montana? The rest are “Right to Work.”

Back on Team “Give them a second for crying out loud,” we’re talking about Harvard, allegedly one of the best colleges in the world. We can expect them to do right by probably investigating this properly, and we’d hope any employer we’d ever work for would bother to take more than a femtosecond to figure out if there’s evidence supporting an accusation against us.

Obviously a lot of countries do have Big R “Rights” as far as labor goes, but the US is not one of them.

  • While it feels deeply satisfying to say that and even applaud you, I’ll do a hot take:

Your country probably has almost or exactly as many deranged morons as we do here with MAGA, per capita. The difference is we’ve weaponized voter disenfranchisement and bipartisan hackery (crucially including gerrymandering), largely abandoned ethical journalism standards, and never really properly dealt with the aftermath of our civil war, what with shaming our traitors and educating and rebuilding the nation. We were able to get away with all of that because we toot our own horn so hard for so long about being the bastion of democracy, and the world largely agreed with us.

So we still have backwoods y’allQaeda training grounds who vote Trump because anyone with a (D) is the (D)evil, and their vote counts more than someone in an educated area due to the electoral college system.

TL;DR: MAGA isn’t special - other countries have AfD, FdI, etc., which are all rising in popularity despite you turning your nose up at us for us being uniquely ridiculous.

  • I used to think the same thing before I became a cop. Reddit was flush with what seemed like justified outrage at the obvious recursive and thus tyrannical nature of arresting someone for resisting arrest.

… then I found out some states call their Obstruction statute “Resisting (Someone Else’s) Arrest.”

Obviously this leads to a lot of confusion, anger, and division. Another fine example of how legislation can drop the ball on doing their jobs and leave law enforcement holding the bag of public ire.

  • You inventing this “no politics on lemmy at all” strawman is all you.

Okay, off my community. Is that better? I can’t tell if you’re being intentionally pedantic or not, but I guess if you’re not, the main issue I’m getting at here is politics is a whack-a-mole where it’s NIMBY until there’s nowhere but /c/politics to talk about it, at which point the baddies win because all dissent is properly quarantined and people have a much easier time pretending nothing is going wrong.

Also can you put all of your personal attacks in the garbage where they belong?

  • Democrats are just as racist as the Republicans

    No way.

There’s a massive difference between being proud of being actively racist (MAGA), defiantly believing it’s not possible to be racist in 2026 because MLK ended racism (garden variety Republicans), forgetting about certain invasions and genocides based on (social) media coverage (which is based on expected viewership for ad revenue, which is based on skin color) (garden variety Democrats), and someone who I would describe as generally “not racist,” i.e. you, I assume if for no other reason than expedience of this discussion.

Pretending all three of the other groups are identical is not productive, intellectually dishonest, and makes fighting or educating them harder.

I didn’t insult you other than to say that you’re biased, which I don’t think is an insult personally. I’m biased too, about different things. All humans are.

My point, for the third (3rd) time, is that having Harry be interested in being a cop is not out of character and poor writing because Harry’s traits and background don’t preclude him from an interest in being one.

I think you just don’t understand that cops come from the same schools, communities, homes, families, etc. as anyone else, including you; in other words, you have a significant mental rift that makes it impossible for you to walk the bridge of logic I built for you.

I don’t know if I can build a bridge big enough for you to cross. I guess just stare at my previous comment for a while until it clicks.

TL;DR: If you think, and even shout from the rooftops, that the only people suitable for law enforcement are pieces of shit, guess who is going to become law enforcement? Oh my, we seem to have a Too Many Pieces of Shit in Law Enforcement problem! Wonder how that happened…
