Never experienced that bug you mention but once the power went out during an update and it didn’t want to boot, so I just chose the second option at boot and it’s never failed again. Maybe something strange happened in your case, you should try it again.

You can get it on some abandonware sites nowadays, and there’s even a mod to send commands to the crew with your voice.
Played the first one, but on the steam deck. It was quite an enjoyable game. I’ve also been looking forward to playing the second one, so now’s a good chance!
