  • Can someone help me understand this?

While drawing criticism for limiting Python execution to locked-down Azure cloud containers, Python in Excel has also earned accolades from the likes of Python creator Guido van Rossum, now a Microsoft Distinguished Engineer, as well as Pandas creator Wes McKinney.

Does this mean the creator of the Python language is a Microsoft employee now?

Further, does this mean that Python in spreadsheets only works in the cloud MS Office?

    Then there’s this:

Left unmentioned in Monday’s announcement is that Microsoft managed to convince the USPTO to issue it a patent in July 2024 on the Enhanced Integration of Spreadsheets With External Environments (alt. source), which Microsoft explains covers the “implementation of enhanced integrations of native spreadsheet environments with external resources such as-but not limited to-Python.” All of which may come as a surprise to software vendors and individuals that were integrating Excel and external programming environments years before Microsoft filed its patent application in September 2022.

What are the implications now that this patent has been granted - considering there is nothing new with running scripting languages in spreadsheet applications like Libre Office Calc?

And I wonder: if a spreadsheet application vendor wanted to incorporate scripting in Python in their application, could they be hindered from doing so?

I’m curious to hear the thoughts of others on any of this news. Thank you.

  • The article is truly representative of a sleazy drama - and that’s putting it nice. We learn that Oliver condemned the post:

Chase Oliver, the Libertarian Party’s presidential nominee, condemned the since-deleted post.

    That’s great.

But then the LPNH responded - to him - their candidate leader, I stress… as follows:

The Libertarian Party of New Hampshire responded to Oliver’s statement, telling him to “f*** off” and “read any book on libertarianism.” They went on to call him a homophobic slur.

It’s seemingly out of The Onion - except it’s for real.

  • The recipients of these messages have something in common: they’re listed in federal campaign filings as having donated to Joe Biden or Kamala Harris using ActBlue, a ubiquitous online platform that makes it simple to contribute to a vast array of Democratic candidates and liberal causes. ActBlue, a non-profit, has become central to Democrats’ grassroots fundraising efforts. For years, Republicans struggled to emulate its success.

It would seem the oligarchs are threatened by people supporting left-wing causes.

    Ergo, our contributions are helping.

So we should keep doing this.

    This snippet was also notable:

Campaign finance researchers contacted by Mother Jones said it was notable that the Fair Election Fund claimed to have $5 million when it launched but does not appear to be raising money online. That suggests the likelihood of a large preexisting source of money.

FCC filings list a woman named Tori Sachs as an official with the group. That is the name of a political consultant in Michigan who has helped spearhead several dark money efforts in support of Republican candidates in that state. Sachs has worked for multiple organizations funded by the billionaire DeVos family, including by Betsy DeVos, who was Trump’s Education secretary and previously chaired the Michigan GOP.
