  • but this is after 8 months of nothing.

    Yeah that’s definitely a problem :/

I have to wonder if they’re stretching themselves thin because of all the new projects they’re creating and then consequently having to continue supporting?

I don’t regret my FW16 purchase at all. I just think it needs a bit more polish and a new GPU.

Totally fair and a reasonable request as most people rooting for Framework that I’ve heard also wants a new gpu and hardware refresh for their existing laptops.

But yeah maybe Framework should hire a dedicated person for community communications to relay between existing customers and the devops team🤔

  • To me Framework’s desktop makes no sense in this market.

They already have a gem of a laptop that is the Framework 16. So portability makes no sense.

And the fact that it’s barely upgradable in comparison to a DIY/custom Mini-PC build with standard parts that anyone could select and buy using pcpartpicker.com. You’d have to pay me to want a Framework desktop.

No shame on them for trying. I just feel like this idea needed to cook in their oven for a bit longer before they decided to ship it. It just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for gamers, prosumers, or the enterprise market.

I’m still not sure who this is really for as the upgradability angle is out, portability is also out due to their own laptops, and performance is also out as you’re better off with regular desktops as they have that upgradability option by default with the best possible performance.

I’d be interested in hearing what people think about this though cause maybe there’s something here I’ve missed.

  • My personal nixos config

dude, I learned and used NixOS for 2 years and I found it incredibly challenging as some of the documentation is fragmented to the point where you have to delve into several hundreds of others configurations to fix singular problems. Some issues are actually impossible to solve (unless you have months of time off and proficiency with Nix) as NixOS is not FHS compliant.

The langauge Nix is not Nix the package manager, Nix is NixOS the OS.

In addition, good luck with finding what you want as sometimes it’s unsearchable as the devs decided not to distinguish the 3 from each other.
    Why? I have no idea.

I haven’t even mentioned Nix Flakes which is it’s own level of complexity due to it’s experimental but recommended status by the community.

Perhaps it’s a skill issue but I feel that I’ve spent my 2 years of due diligence to know that it’s still quite rough on the edges.

At this point I’m personally moving back to Arch.
I’ll be experimenting with Gentoo sometime in the near future but at this point it’s very unlikely I’ll ever revisit Nix and NixOS especially since Valve is doing fantastic work in collaboaration with the Arch Linux devs.

    For all I’ve said above

Because reading the docs is too hard for an imbecile?

Please reconsider before posting future antagonistic and abbrasive comments as it does no favors to you nor the community and only paints a target on your back👍

Nix and NixOS are not easy beasts to tame as advanced help is sparce and individual challenges can be quite niche such that help cannot be readily found.

  • Keymapp is ZSA’s garbage app I was referring to.

It can’t be used to flash boards offline.

If you have a Moonlander or Voyager you can test this by temporarily disabling wifi/ethernet. Keymapp won’t allow you to flash the board which is silly as internet is totally unnecessary for this operation as you already have the layout on your local storage, the app, and the board.

That’s why I see ZSA’s products as proprietary hardware.

For anyone reading my comment please don’t misunderstand. I love my Voyager to bits but at the same time I hate that it’s basically proprietary by default instead of being the ultimate fully open-source split keyboard that it could have been (like Framework’s laptops).

As such I won’t go back to using anyother mechanical/splitortho until I can either build my own using the Voyager as a launching point or someone else makes my dream open source splitortho ahead of me.

I forgot to mention but this is why I won’t buy anything from ZSA anymore nor will mention it to my friends as I also don’t want them to get screwed by this needless blockade.

  • It’s fine, especially if you aren’t intentionally shaking the system.

I’d check it like once a year but besides that as long as it works I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about.

My close friend has loose ssds in their system that hangs off their sata power cables which I worry about more, although seeing as how they’ve yet to report any issues even that zaney decision is still going strong for at least 3 years now.
