I’m Indigenous Canadian and the traditional footwear we grew up with was moccasins … animal hide wrapped almost like a bundle to wrap the entire foot. In the winter time, it’s actually several layers of hides, cloth, and any material at hand where you wrap your foot in the same way as one moccassin, then do it again and again until you build up three, four or five layers, depending on how cold it was. Then you ended up with footwear that looked like a thumbless mitten at the end of your leg.
