Alberta’s election agency announced Monday it has approved a proposed referendum question on the province separating from Canada.
The question seeks a yes or no answer to: “Do you agree that the province of Alberta should cease to be a part of Canada to become an independent state?”
Elections Alberta says the proponent — the Alberta Prosperity Project and its chief executive officer, Mitch Sylvestre — have until early January to appoint a financial officer for its petition campaign, after which signature collection can begin.
I usually approve of genuine independence movements…but this doesn’t look like one. This is another Donbas/Luhansk People’s Republic situation, where the separatism is sponsored for future annexation by a bigger neighbour.
What the fuck? The sounds like a horrible idea. Who there would vote yes for this and not expect risking to become as US territory for the oil?
About 30% of the province
Are you sure they’re not secretly Canadian MAGA and want to be annexed by Trump?
That 30% of the province absolutely is
Worse, if ONLY they vote: they win.
( same as how the Democrats “won” the election of Harris by sitting-out the election in droves )

Alberta is First Nations land and they didnt consent. All this shit is going to do is polarize Alberta even more and cause unnecessary bloodshed
This fuck around and find out shit needs to stop.
Fucking GO.
Just, you don’t get the land: you get a plane ticket.
Adorable
I think the google trend after the vote will be: “what does landlocked mean?”
Wouldn’t be surprised if they just decide to join the US as the actual 51st state
The US would never give them statehood. They’ll end up like Puerto Rico or the CNMI.
… Does Alberta realize that doing business in a landlocked country can be difficult? Almost all their imports and exports will have to go through either Canada or the US.
Thry would be conquered by their southern neighbour.
I reckon they would be part of the us in short order
I can guarantee you that I hope BC taxes the shit out of any oil that goes through our pipelines from Alberta to the coast
Oh they will. With glee. And good luck with Alaska. Bc takes great pride in being the headache of Alberta. This feud has been going on well before trump or Daniel was around
