So cops can just walk up and say “hey show me your papers!” and you have to comply? Lots of us have issues with that. What if you’re at a protest or some other decidedly anti-statusquo do you still have to identify yourself? What obligations do the police have? Do they have to identify themselves (name/badge) or is it enough to wear a uniform?
you can refuse, but then police can detain you. Im not aware of police having the obligation to identify themself and i never saw them doing that. As far i know them having the uniform is enough.
I mean I don’t know where you are from but at least where I live they have to identify if asked to and they can’t just detain you without cause. While cause can be pretty broad, like there was a crime in the neighborhood, it can’t be “we don’t like your face”.
Interesting, the United States is geographically very dispersed (the state of Texas is roughly the same geographic size as France) so carrying documents for internal travel makes less sense.

well i dont how the fact you have a bigger geographic area justify not having id ? if you mean practical i can see it but since most of you take care for naything i guess having them in the car like assurance etc ( in my country we must have a lot of paper related to the car every time we takle it) i guess it would sork out for 90% of the time.

yes, specially to police officers. If i dont have them i can be detain in a police station the time they proceed to my identification
