Samsung Smart TV owners can now use Jellyfin natively, as the open-source media server is now available on the Tizen platform.
Just run a small linux pc and a wireless keyboard+mouse
I’d rather use an Android TV box, so I can have Dolby Vision, etc.
I use libux btw
My gosh I just searched for libux, thinking maybe there was a great new Linux user experience out there for my media library. I even got confused for a split second when it autocorrected my search to Linux before realising the typo
I use libuv btw.
I use pibtv btw.
Really wanted to like Jellyfin but it just can’t replace plex yet for me. Once it’s developed a little more I’ll definitely take another look since plex is shitting the bed.
Acronyms, initialisms, abbreviations, contractions, and other phrases which expand to something larger, that I’ve seen in this thread:
Fewer Letters More Letters DNS Domain Name Service/System IP Internet Protocol NAS Network-Attached Storage Plex Brand of media server package
4 acronyms in this thread; the most compressed thread commented on today has 5 acronyms.

I use it through tailscale. I can still use it locally (yay). Still would like to see tailscale on tizen
Great news, but still not available on mine. I have to wait. Also dev way didn’t work on mine.
I’m still not connecting NY TV to any network, local or otherwise.
Apparently they will try to connect to open networks and try to tunnel through to get internet, so I set bogus manual DNS, gateway, and ip info so it can’t connect to anything correctly.
If they’re going so far as scanning open networks & tunneling, why would they bother obeying dns gateways you specify?
🤷♂️ I figured it couldn’t hurt.Better than doing nothing 🤷♂️
I only own one Samsung TV. Its a really smart TV. Its magnificent. It never switches input which is a good thing since I never need to. This is because it has no built in services of the so called 'smart tv’s"
I thought newer Samsung tvs ditched tizen?
I had to practically hack my Samsung TV I order to get jellyfin on it. A little annoyed it took this long but at least its there now.
There’s a funny one-click tool here: https://github.com/Jellyfin2Samsung/Samsung-Jellyfin-Installer but I guess it’s not necessary anymore
Damn that looks like it would have saved me some time.
Omfg. I love you. 😭. I tried this very last week to make it work through their workaround and it never wanted to work out. Thank you so much bringing this up.
i reckon ill unblock it from WAN long enough to get a new app
Kodi running on an (old) Nvidia Shield Pro, reading from a NAS via dlnr. This works nicely and I don’t get any quality degradation… Except for HDR+ which the shield doesn’t support and I was stupid and bought a Samsung TV, which is bad for numerous reasons, but also this one.
And of course, we are now closing in on the decade since it was released, and still no viable replacement.
Um…. Okay?
Replacement for what? kodi? you’ll pry kodi out of my charred and flayed hands! (American)
EDIT nvm can’t be kodi. forgive me.
but yes i love kodi
edit edit,
any old Chromebook can run LibreELEC!
Sorry, the Nvidia Shield. It’s super old, but still best in class.
I tried Kodi years ago when I heard about some guy getting busted at a local flea market for selling Kodi rigged appliances. I didn’t download anything, but that UI was atrocious. After about 5 minutes of tinkering around, I just uninstalled it. Probably one of the worst UI’s I’ve encountered.
I’ve hacked mine together with a control4 system i pulled out of a dumpster, with a handheld remote it is quite navigable!
kore app/yatze on phone or direct selection of media from home assistant, you really don’t have to see the GUI that much at all if you’d prefer not to.
smart playlists, addons for other features.
i think it’s a swell front-end for a media server!
Wait, I don’t have to update it through dev mode?
That looks like a web view. I have that webview installed for years.
This is false news. Maybe, now it is in the store but the app is not new on tizenos.
Yes, it’s not available on the Store. Not many people are able to turn on developer mode and install the app through other means.
Ok, now fix the shitty client on appletv…
That’s the beauty of open source! I’m sure they’d love another helping hand! https://github.com/jellyfin/swiftfin
yes, unpaid open source devs, do my bidding.
fix it yourself, ExcessShiv
As an opensource dev I don’t mind having people say this. It’s good to get feedback regardless of whether it’s a call to action or merely a suggestion. You can’t know what direction people want the project to go in otherwise.
Dude no one is forcing them to work on the project, they can just ditch it if they don’t want to do it anymore. Just because it’s free people are still allowed to voice opinions on the project, sure my comment is tongue in cheek, no one cares…welcome to the internet, is this your first day?
As my parents said:
The tone in your voice makes the music. There is a significant difference between
“I just hope the devs can now focus on improving the AppleTV/iOS viewing experience”
and
Hopefully the devs will now fix the shitty Apple app.
Just because it’s free people are still allowed to voice opinions on the project
Just because Lemmy is free, people are allowed to voice opinions on your comment, and judge you by it. It’s my opinion that you’re an asshole, and your opinion is equally worthless.
I wish I could go to your parents and say something like, “OK, now fix the shitty attitude on @ExcessShiv@lemmy.dbzer0.com.”, but you probably got it from them in the first place.
Are you this shitty to people who submit pull requests to your dog-shit bug-ridden open-source software repos? Do you even have anything that’s open-source that tries to solve a problem?
Are you this shitty to people who submit pull requests to your dog-shit bug-ridden open-source software repos? Do you even have anything that’s open-source that tries to solve a problem?
Of course, obviously I am the only infallible person in the universe…scrub
No, your attitude towards people who provide something for free while doing no work to maintain or work on that thing is the problem and makes you very “fallible”… asshole
people are still allowed to voice opinions
…
now fix the shitty client on appletv
is not an opinion, it’s just being a jerk
You thinking I’m a jerk doesn’t change the fact that the appletv app is a burning pile of dog crap. My opinion is that they should actively work on it, the lacking quality and functionality is just fact.
Fix the shitty server first though.
My server works fine with all other clients though, except the appletv one. In the appletv app I cannot change audio language or reliably change subs. Or, technically I can, it just doesn’t select the language I actually choose, it chooses some random one. This only happens on appletv app, it works as intended on all other devices, both android, iOS, browsers and MS/Linux clients.
I actually had that happen on the Android one a few years ago. I’m guessing the Apple one is years behind.
Apparently only for appletv, for iOS there are no issues.
Infuse works great on Apple TV. It’s the best Jellfin experience. Although infuse is free to use it requires a subscription to play all media formats, in practice not free.
So essentially the Plex experience we were/are trying to get away from.
Great.Yeah it doesn’t work with your own media server on the free tier, so they can go fuck themselves.
Mine’s working just fine. Why isn’t infuse free tier working for you?
When I try to point it at my server, I’m prompted with a page saying it’s only possible in the paid tier
Hmmmm. I wonder if you uninstall and reinstall the app, would the same page appear? I’m not near my appleTV so I can’t see if my sessions were a fluke. I’ve used it twice this last week.
Android TV also has similar issues
