    So the front of the elevator doesn’t have an internal door? I’m unnerved. I’m imagining a shoelace slipping in or something and then your leg gets pulled in.

      It’s not that bad, when you have have an elevator without an inner door, you have tech like light curtains and pressure plates.

      You can actually see the light curtain in the picture, it looks like a row of holes in the brass, and they send beams of light across the opening, and if any beam is disturbed, the elevator stops immediately.

      The pressure plate is installed by the door, in floor or celing, any presure on the plate, if something has got caught, it will trigger and stop the elevator right away.

        That’s really great to hear actually and does reduce me anxiety a fair bit. Although I’m sure a fair number of countries that have this style elevator haven’t caught up tech-wise yet. Idk if it would be immediately obvious if they do or don’t either.
