minus-squarecally [he/they]@pawb.sociallinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up64arrow-down1·1 year agoWell technically Charon is bigger relative to its parent body but, y’know, Pluto isn’t a planet…

minus-squareNailbar@sopuli.xyzlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up33arrow-down2·1 year agoA-ha! So the real reason Pluto got degraded was so Earth could keep it’s biggest moon status!

minus-squareMelatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.comlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up3arrow-down8·1 year agoTwin planets. Caron and Plato. Downgraded to dwarves because NDG sucks milky ways.
minus-squarelunarul@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up4·1 year agoCharon is still a moon, nobody upgraded it to dwarf planet.
minus-squareMelatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.comlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1·1 year agoI thought for an object to be a satellite it’s orbital point had to be located inside the body of the other entity.
minus-squarelunarul@lemmy.worldlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up1·edit-21 year agoThere’s currently no formal definition requiring that. By that definition, none of Pluto’s five moons would be moons, since they all orbit the same barycenter. There’s a whole discussion about it here and it looks like it might be reconsidered in the future https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charon_(moon)#Classification
minus-squareMelatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.comlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up2arrow-down1·1 year agoThat seems terribly unfair. Downgrades but no upgrades?
minus-squareFauxReal@sh.itjust.workslinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up4·1 year agoHe might suck, but you know it wasn’t his decision right?
minus-squareMelatonin@lemmy.dbzer0.comlinkfedilinkEnglisharrow-up4arrow-down2·1 year agoYeah, but it’s fun to blame him. He was vocally parading the news and using it, as usual, for self promotion. So I let him have it.
