    Shouldn’t this be: A Woodpecker Preparing for Winter? The order of words a in sentence, difference makes.

          This IS the way. And of course the acorns must me soaked for 24 hours in salt water. Low and slow on the cooking, sous vid at 64C for 14-18 hours is considered ideal when preparing at seal level. Adjustments based on altitude may be necessary at mid-elevations below 2500m, and a definite necessity above that elevation. See attached chart, and citations.

    This is amazing. I have a question though: How come only the author woodpecker can remove the acorns but not other woodpeckers? What kind of ID tech are these guys using?

      Genuine questions for the purpose of discussion: should photos of spiders also be marked as NSFW for arachnophobia? What other phobias should and shouldn’t be considered in this?

      I do not have any genuine phobias, so I concede that I’m speaking out of my limited knowledge coming only from years of solo and group therapy for other issues, but NSFW tags are intended to block images that you wouldn’t want your boss (or mom, or general public) to see you looking at due to them being sexual or otherwise inappropriate. There are a lot of things that are going to trigger phobias and other very difficult feelings for a lot of people, but I don’t think it’s feasible to ask that everyone accommodate all possibilities when posting images or sharing stories. I think it’s a positive thing to tag content warnings in bodies of text, for example, and at the same time I think that a person that can have an extreme reaction to what is otherwise an innocuous image due to a personal issue needs to take responsibility for it.

      I hope this doesn’t come across as minimizing the very real struggles that people with phobias have to deal with on a daily basis, and as a whole I support making public spaces more accessible.

      ETA: my understanding of a phobia is having an irrational fear so severe that it causes very real and disruptive anxiety and panic upon being exposed to the phobia. If seeing an image like this causes you discomfort or unease, but doesn’t really affect you severely or impact your life negatively, is that really a phobia?

        I think trypophobia is a “meme” phobia on the internet.

        Like how everyone says “oh that’s my OCD”. It’s not really OCD (and it’s somewhat demeaning to people that do really have OCD), they’re just picky/finicky/particular.

        Same with trypophobia. It may be a crippling phobia to a small amount of people, but it’s unsettling at most to a lot of people. Like that. Lots of people don’t have a serious phobia around a bunch of holes (some people do, I’m not saying it’s not real)…it just makes them feel really uncomfortable in a weird and almost indescribable way.

          Fun fact: Caulrophobia (fear of clowns) is way more common than arachnophobia (according to a quick glance at wikipedia), if we ignore how serious a reaction usually is in deciding what to cw, we better be ready to hide all Balatro screenshots.

      We have AI which is good at image recognition. Just use this little schmuck to add tags to posts and allow users to filter tags. Would also helo with Trump/Elon filtering etc.

        For the sake of argument, Merriam-Webster defines the “phobia” suffix as:

        intolerance or aversion for [1]

        as well as

        exaggerated fear of [1]

        That being said, one can define a words however they wish — imo, all that matters is that those engaged in a conversation together all use the same definitions. If you would like to reserve the “phobia” suffix to represent only “exaggerated fear of”, what would you propose in its stead to represent “intolerance or aversion for”?

          There’s a study showing about 1 in 6 people have it to some degree, so relatively common. It’s just that the images that trigger it are specific and rare, for me the clustering and the type of holes have to be just right, but if it is, ick

          The way I learned about it was someone posted a picture specifically meant to trigger it on 4chan to troll people, and it haunted me enough to look into it.
