Looks like the Schengen area is pretty much just disintegrating at this point. I doubt the borderless freedom of movement we’ve been used to for a long time is coming back anytime soon. Closures are definitely snowballing at the moment.

So now the best time to take that Euro trip?

Seriously though, just went to Italy, France and Netherlands and it was incredibly how cheap and easy it was to fly between different countries. Definitely want to go back for Germany

Yes, it’s been pretty easy for a long time. However, there’s been a slow but steady move toward more border controls over the past few years. Individual countries pretty much ignore EU reprimands about keeping borders open with a big fat “screw you.” They have found a loophole, which allows them to close the borders for 6 months at a time and continue that indefinitely. It’s been mostly smaller countries like Austria and Denmark, but we’re now seeing Germany join that behavior. All of this will eventually add to air travel prices and definitely to the time it takes to travel by car and train.

    • Perhaps not totally borderless, but how about something like AU-NZ? Where EU/EFTA/etc citizens can (after going thru a brief and perfunctory check) still travel freely? And the same for spouses of EU citizens/permanent residents of EU countries with the right paperwork/documentation?
