  • Ok. This isn’t what the headline is making it out to be.

    Ecuador won 9.5 billion already, but there have been findings that it didn’t win that money legally. From this article:

    The 2018 ruling was based on evidence that the lawyers who had won the $9.5 billion judgment did so by forging an expert’s signature, blackmailing a judge, facilitating the ghostwriting of a key piece of evidence and bribing other Ecuadorian judges — acts the lawyers either denied or said weren’t illegal in Ecuador at the time.

    This $220m is to cover the legal fees of the lawyers who fought in that case. Ecuador still got the $9.5b, though the may end up losing it due to the fraud they committed in winning. However, IANAL, and I definitely don’t understand multinational lawsuits, so, idk, do your own research.
