  • This is a very common substitution but in some cases you definitely need more. Good recipes will state what the batter should look like so you can adjust to the right consistency (wet and runny, thick and stiff, etc). I usually add just a splash of oil alongside to increase the fat but but always, depends on the recipe.

I would actually guess they under mixed the batter. I find a good muffin needs a little bit of that gluten build up for a nice crumb and bite. Not too much, but you can be too careful mixing ingredients and you won’t get the right texture in my book.

  • Depends on how you define “best”. Most well known? Most read? Most highly awarded? Wrote the most? “Best” is such a vague and useless term here. I’ll give it a go though.

Someone already mentioned Ursula K. Le Guin. So I’ll add a few more along with their likely most well known book

    • Mary Shelly (Frankenstein)
    • Agatha Christie (Murder on the Orient Express)
    • Emily Brontë (Wuthering Heights)
    • Jane Austen (Pride and Prejudice)
    • Harper Lee (To kill a mockingbird)
    • Margaret Atwood (Handmaid’s Tale)
    • Laura Ingals Wilder (Little House on the Prairie)
    • Beatrix Potter (The tale of Peter rabbit)
    • Ann Frank (her diary)
    • Margaret Mitchell (Gone with the Wind)
    • Anne McCaffrey (Dragonriders of Pern)
    • Octavia Butler (parable of the sower)

And just to spice it up a bit:

    • Hiromu Arakawa (Full metal alchemist)

I think that’s a good start. I’ll end it here or I’ll be here all day

  • All my friends and I have felt this way for a few years now. My wife and I are planning to spend $200 total on Christmas and that’s including the dinner we’ll likely host for friends.

Halloween is fun and my wife and I get into it but it’s also becoming a very commercialized thing around us. Everyone buying the massive 12 ft skeletons and trying to outdo each other with the yard and giving out bigger and bigger treats. Someone was handing out full Doritos bags this year, not the single serve, we’re talking family size.

I think my wife and I are going to try getting into Mari Lwyd next year instead.
