A new generation of young political leaders is gaining power in the US by using their personal experience with gun violence to push for reforms they say the US is ready for.
Their ascent is part of a nearly decade-long shift, from gun violence prevention being a third-rail issue in politics that was rarely spoken about on campaign trails, to one that candidates, most of them Democrats, are now running – and winning – on.
This shift is due in part to a collective exhaustion with gun violence, whether mass shootings – like the recent ones at Brown University in Rhode Island and at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia – firearms suicides or community violence, that continues to tear apart the lives of too many Americans, said Justin Pearson, a Tennessee state representative who’s running for US congress.
“It’s been an issue that has impacted my life,” Pearson, 30, said. “There was something about being a state representative and in a position, witnessing the government inactions and remembering the effects it has in my community, that pushed me to say this is an issue we need to prioritize.”

Jesus Christ that was a long ass article to read through and not a single candidate has won. It’s just a list of who is running.
So I am failing to see how this new generation of young political leaders hell bent on banning firearms are gaining power?
Also is it really a good time to tell Americans that they need to be disarmed when the vast majority of us are having a hard time with a fascist federal government and police forces who refuse to do their job?
This kind of stuff is not going to help bring in new voters to their party. It may work well with a portion of those who would already vote for them, but it may also drive away others who were potentials.
It doesn’t really matter. Even if all their candidates won and were in a position to not just propose but pass laws, there is no law that can be passed that will both work at reducing gun violence and also be found constitutional by SCOTUS. Guns won.
This is my biggest issue with anyone preaching gun bans and the like.
I am actively encouraging my lgbtq+ and other minority friends to arm and train, and have had a few over to my personal range (basically my back yard in the country with a big dirt hill surrounding a couple steel plates) to practice with because they don’t feel comfortable going to public ranges. (deep red country and likely to encounter bigots with guns and bad attitudes)
Armed minorities are harder to oppress.
I’m a little surprised you even got one downvote for this
Democrats are going to lose a lot of moderate voters with their anti 2A stance.
The fascists are here, the government is corrupt and all the gun owners aren’t doing the thing they swear is the reason they have the guns.
So your plan is to disarm the non fascists brilliant.
But it’s okay! ICE will be definitely be less likely to harass marginalized communities when they’re disarmed. Every rich white woman I know says so.
No… I’m saying that right now is the time to act, but no one’s is even though all the 2A people have been jerking themselves off to the idea they’re gonna fight the corrupt government.
You say “time to act” like the act is some glorious mass mobilization into armed conflict. Historically, there is a slight, but significant, reduction in majority violence against armed minority communities, e.g. areas of the Jim Crow south with higher rates of black firearm ownership. There is inherent value in the oppressors knowing that certain pockets of their targets are armed. I don’t know what fantasy land you’re living in where we all just decide to fight the US Army some day. The left leaning and leftist gun owners you’re talking about aren’t the same brainless moron conservative doomsday preppers, which you would know if your bothered to expose yourself to literally any of them.
Okie dokie.
Gun owners aren’t being hassled, seems gun ownership is working for gun owners.
Yeah don’t worry. This piece is just idiotic wishcasting by a British publication.
