i have a quest 2, and its terrible after many years of use, its controllers have so so so many problems and my game keeps crashing mid vrchat freaky sesh with the fuzz (furry huzz)
so should i get a quest 3? my birthday is on march the 6th which is rather soon so i could get it then but at the same the quest 4 might get announced and released this year in October or november so should i just wait it out or nah

Quest 4 is rumored to release in 2027. I mean if you want to wait you can but the quest 3 is a fine headset with real sharp looking images

As a Quest 3 owner who upgraded from the 2, I love my Quest 3 and it’s a fun device to play mobile or on the PC. I do both but prefer Steam when I can since I always have access to the games regardless of device. But I have jailbroken my Quest (I think that’s what you’d call it?) which allows me to play pirated games and homebrew too. But that process is stupid involving you to become a Meta Developer.
I know you said the Steam Frame is not for you, but I have to say that I am strongly considering selling my Quest 3 to get the Steam Frame because it seems like a better device in nearly every way. Valve has said the price will be less than the Index, with the Index being $999 USD. But that could change.
Have you considered the Pico headsets and compared to the Quest? That’s another headset that’s very similar.
No one really knows when the Quest 4 will be announced or if it will. Meta isn’t doing as great as they hoped with the Metaverse and everything AI so they are hurting to some degree. They already seem to not be doing third party headsets anymore, which isn’t a good sign.
The Quest 3 is a solid headset though. It has a lot of good things about it but wasn’t a huge step up from the Quest 2 as much as I needed to upgrade, so the upgrade to the 4 may or may not be necessary. But some games do require a 3 now, so maybe? It’s hard to tell you to wait or not because the wait could be another year or never.
I pirate games on my quest 2! however, there are a few games that I want to buy when I get a quest 3 because I think it’ll be worth it (Metro Awakening being one of them, I pirated bonelab but I might actually buy it aswell as into the radius)
I’m sorry, I totally skipped that part in your original post that you currently have a Quest 2, so you are familiar with some stuff.
I will say what I love about my Quest 3 over the 2:
- it’s much lighter in weight and you can immediately feel it on your face where it doesn’t feel like it slags forward as much
- I personally love the color pass through versus the black and white pass through. But some people on here have said they prefer black and white, so this isn’t a pro for everyone. I find it more useful since I can walk around without taking off the headset to see my surroundings like I did with my Quest 2. Some things just didn’t come across in b&w like they do in color. Before anyone says it, I know the Steam Frame is b&w, but the other pros mean more to me hence why I’m still moving to SF
- the quality is better. Not by a ton, but you can tell a difference in graphics quality between the two devices. It wasn’t enough to make me want to upgrade.
- was glad to get Batman VR which has been really fun. Deadpool has also been a fun, another 3 exclusive, IIRC
- i got the 512GB model, which has been nice for more games storage. I was running out of storage at 256GB but still have a little more than 100GB with all the games I want. Deadpool alone was like 30GB
What I don’t like over the 2? I honestly can’t think of anything the 2 did better than the 3. For me, everything was better or the same. Nothing was worse. Though, like I said, some people may not like color pass through, so some things may be up to personal preference. The 2 was a solid headset but the 3 was an upgrade, but not sure it was worth the price hike and not sure it was fair of Meta to block some games from the 2.
That’s honestly everything I can think of that I preferred more than the 2. My brother got a 3 before I did so I was able to do a direct comparison with both devices which helped my decision. If you can get ahold of someone who has a 3, that might help you too so you can compare both devices next to each other to make a better decision.
I remember reading a few weeks ago that Meta wants to increase the price of the Quest 3 soon. They wanted it to be more premium feel or something, so you may want to consider that. I sold my Quest 2 back in late 2023 for $100 USD so I really didn’t get much back to put towards the 3, and it’ll be much less, especially with less demand than back then for the 2, in case you’re thinking of getting rid of your 2.
Oh I have the 128 gig quest 2 and bonelab take up a whole 50 gigabytes with all my mods so the storage upgrade will be great!

There are small bits in Asgard’s Wrath 2 which take advantage of the colour passthrough, that won’t happen if you play on Q2.
Actually, there isn’t a ton of games supporting MR, but for those that do the new passthrough is awesome.
mixed reality is cool but i wouldnt by a game that entirely uses mixed reality.
id love to get metro awakening tho
Honestly I couldn’t really tell a huge difference in the two devices playing the same games. Granted, I didn’t play games like Batman or Deadpool on the 2 that are supposedly too demanding for the 2, so maybe newer games in the last year do require more power than the 3 had?
Both of those games play very well on the 3 with no issues. I have a legit copy of Batman and a pirated copy of Deadpool, for reference.
I never had any issues on the 2 and anything like crashing or stuttering playing natively.
There was one game I remember was locked to the 3 that I tried a pirated copy on the 2 and I couldn’t really tell a difference. I’m trying to find out what the name of it was because I can’t remember. I just remember it was this game that used pass through to shoot enemies in the real world. Besides the difference between color and black and white, it didn’t lag or anything like that on my 2 even though it was locked officially from working on the 2. That made me feel like some of these games were locked away more so to force you to upgrade than for any real hardware reason.
For reference, I play mostly offline single player games and mostly shooters like Pavlov and Contractors and casual games like I Am Cat. I feel like the experience is generally the same across these two devices when remembering playing on the 2 versus the 3.
But like you said, the extra storage is good for mods. Contractors has a ton of mods I take advantage of and the extra space is much appreciated for that.
Granted I didn’t play any MMO type of games on either headset. I played VRChat and Metaverse once or twice, but not enough to notice any severe lagging. It could be possible that those take more.
I love Pavlov, I was going to buy it after the free beta ended but I never got around to it :(
Steam Frame is expected to come out sometime early this year; might hold off for a bit to see how it compares if that’s of interest to you.

i was going to get the quest 3 for christmas but when the steam frame was announced i was so hyped that i made a deal with my mum that i can get it for my birthday if i give up getting anything for christmas.
so many people are glazing the steam frame to make it way more than it actually is. also its hella expensive.

No price announced yet. But it’ll definitely be more expensive than a quest 3.
