I found that Victorinox (makers of the swiss army knife) do an equivalent to the leatherman multi tool. The “swiss tool X”.

Qobuz’s shop has a fantastic catalog of nearly all the music I want. A whole lot more than Bandcamp. Highly recommend checking it out if you’re building your music library!

    • Using Qwant instead of Google Search. It’s way more down-to-earth
    • Completely stopped using PayPal
    • Migrated from Gmail to Proton Mail
    • On my way to setting up a home server with storage and Nextcloud
    • Not really fully European, but switched from Reddit to Lemmy completely
    • Convinced my GF to also have a look at every-day-products and choose European alternatives, if possible. And she’s into it 😎

I discovered how much I like L’Oréal men products, especially the barber Shower Gel and Deodorant. Used to only use old spice before.

The Kaufland brand energy drinks are much cheaper and just as tasty as Monster (I like the apple one the best).

Ripped all bluey and spidey episodes (OBS FTW) and canceled Disney plus.

Bought a used electric BMW instead of a Tesla for my wife.

Switched from coca cola and soda stream to supermarket brand siroups and sodapop.

Chio or supermarket brand instead of lays and Pringles.

    Still some work to do:

    • Google One (3 eur a month) for Gmail and photos storage, testing immich for the last few months
    • YouTube Premium for the family (24 eur a month), no substitute in sight
    • Samsung Phones, no substitute in sight
    • MacBook from work, no good alternatives

YouTube Premium for the family (24 eur a month), no substitute in sight

Not saying this will be a no effort switch, but imo the best substitute in sight would be the open seas. There is tons of ways to get the benefits of premium, without giving money to google. But it is a lot easier for a single adult to figure this out than it is for a whole family so no judgement and seeing you did so as a solution to Disney+ i know i’m not telling you about novel idea, but still wanted to write not paying for the original is sometimes more possible than paying for an alternative.

Yeah, it’s a mix of kids use, daily changing content, and consumption on the TV. Hard to get an adblock working and too much work to yt-dlp all the videos I watch everyday, plus I’d like to still compensate the creators somehow. It’s a complex one.

Hard to get an adblock working

Nowadays it really isn’t. You install an app like you install the YouTube app, whether it be on Android TV or Android phone. Same for Windows and Linux, you install another app like you’ve done countless times before.

I have a tizen samsung TV and a Toshiba with ancient Toshiba OS, and over 20 years of experience in IT. I haven’t gotten it to work, but I’m sure it’s really easy.

I welcome your wisdom, oh lemmy genius.

You worked in IT 20 years? Your original comment doesn’t give that impression.

Anyway, if your TV has HDMI which it most likely will do, plug in an Android TV device and then you can install whichever Android app you want, including ones that allow you to watch YT with no ads.

Yes, I use Arch, btw. Started with Mandrake 7, so about 26 years in fact, although professionally probably closer to 23.

Adding hardware (which costs money) , electricity consumption (more money) and complexity of operation (it has to be kid friendly, as in pressing the YouTube button on the TV remote), let alone the constant troubleshooting every time YouTube changes their anti-adblock very much misses the point.

You’re worried about the energy cost of a Chromecast when you have a TV 😂 How childish do you have to be to resort to building your argument on silly factors like money and energy costs to justify why you can’t manage to install an app on a cheap Android TV device.

Kids nowadays can run rings around average adults when it comes to interacting with touchscreen devices and phones, I think they can manage a TV! This is beyond satire.

Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good.

If you have a google account because it contains email history but it sits dormant, logged out, not using google products for years, then it isn’t supporting them with data.

They won’t delete your data anyway or your fingerprint link or tracking data if you delete your account, might as well also have access to it if needed.

I’ve bought one for my kid so far, the only problem I see is weak 4 (works, but does not show caller id) or no 5G support in Slovenia. Something that shouldn’t be hard to fix, but 🤷

Fairphone 6 or an earlier model? That’s surprising if the 6 doesn’t work with Slovenia’s 5g network, as it supports all the necessary bands.

          1. I think it has to do with configuring for providers (even Pixels didn’t work initially, only after a while with an update). Edit: Note that the situation could have changed since I’ve last checked - I’ll ask him what’s the status now.
