Hey! Oh!
I used duolingo to learn Italian, nothing ever stuck…so i decided to ad in Italian shows and movies. Didn’t help either, i think my storage must be filled up or faulty.
Don’t feel bad about the duo lingo, it’s not meant to actually work. There’s a video my girlfriend showed me recently, if I can maybe find it…
I find that it’s a decent replacement to learn basic vocabulary and that’s about the extent.
Yeah it’s decent for expanding or refreshing a language you’re already at an intermediate level at. I can’t imagine learning from scratch on it.
Someone needs to watch “Better Off Dead!”
Been a long time, all I remember is the bicycle kid, pure snow and the international language at this point.
The Japanese brothers who learned English by watching Howard Cosell and always wanted to race him.
That’s it, I’m rewatching
Recently listened to the Surely You Can’t Be Serious podcast talk about it. I had forgotten about the Japanese brothers. They were great.
I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley
Sounds like I should check out the podcast too
I do like that song from that punk version of a dad band.
“Ricky, this is Monique!”
Wicky.
I’m gonna sound like an AI when I talk to people in Chinese because Duolingo.
I’ve met guys who learned English from Red Dwarf (sound Scouse) and EastEnders (sound Cockney).
For sure this is a thing.
Also a bartender who had a Scottish “regular” so spoke English with his accent (the bar was in Amsterdam).
Huge fan of Red Dwarf, what the hell is a Scouse? Is that the proper term for Smeghead?
It’s the Liverpool accent.
… I’m just going to say ‘yes’ To that. Absolutely.
Early 2000’s I worked with a man that had moved from Iran to Missouri. He sounded like he was from Brooklyn because he learned so much of his English from movies.
Literally this pakistani dude (couldn’t find any other link) https://www.instagram.com/reel/DKh19TWILbv/
Tried to learn Cantonese by watching the Young and Dangerous series, Chow Yun Fatt, Johnnie To movies. Now some of my phrases sounds like a Hong Kong gangster.
Reminds me of Trevor Noah’s bit about going to Germany and learning his accent makes him sound like Hitler.
hahahahaha that was excellent
Lol. This does make me assume that Trevor was learning German by watching Hitler’s speeches.
in a separate video of his stand up comedy he says he downloaded random German speeches to play while falling sleep to help immersion learning, and some of them happened to be Hitler’s lol
Trevor does amazing accents without mocking anyone.

As a Japanese person, I find it really cringey when people speak like anime, but I do my best to applaud their efforts because no matter how silly it may sound, they appreciate my culture enough to want to learn.
Dattebayo!
Fuhgidaboudit!
I knew a French guy who sounded like John Wayne because of westerns. Other than the country twang he had no accent.
