He smacked the cyclist with his car, twice, on purpose, while in a bike labe he drove into, also on purpose.

If this was Denmark he’d lose his car and the license to even own one.

Imagine someone wishing death on you, because you are level headed, and realized that executing everyone who does something wrong, is not the way. I hate that guy as much as the next one, but I at least managed to hold back from wishing death on him.

This guy is just rampaging around, probably stubbed his toe or something.

This is bad design. If a bike path is large enough for a car to get on it and it is next to a road with bad traffic design that holds up cars you should be able to anticipate someone will create a problem. So you should add some vertical columns in the center. Not very many of them because that’s a nucence. Obviously a clear trail is preferable. But two or three polls will make this a non-issue.

I was hoping the cyclist would lose his balance and fall on the hood of the car when he was rammed. Not that I want the cyclist injured, of course, but damage to the precious car? I’m all for that.

I had a road rage incident while I was out riding yesterday - I was in the middle of the lane passing some pedestrians. Note, this is a country road, and there’s no sidewalk or even shoulder. It’s a pretty popular cycling route, but it’s the first time I’ve seen people walking there (I’m not even sure where they were going). Some jackass rolled up right behind me and blew the horn, as I was next to the pedestrians. I gave the “what the hell” gesture, then after I passed the pedestrians, I moved closer to the right edge of the lane, and he swerved over to run me off the road.

Set a few PRs after that incident. lol Later, the rear derailleur cable broke, and I got rained on, so the end of the ride was less great than the rest of it (which was a pretty good ride aside from those incidents).

I ride a 6000$ bike. In places where gangs have robbed bikers at gun point. I have also had people try and crash into me with their cars to be dicks about giving space to a bike on the same road. If anyone is going to try and harm me or rob me. I’d like to be prepared legally.

Insurance affordable for the bike? Imagining you succeed fending off a couple gang members but one pulling up the rear unseen executes you or something.

Prob cuz I watched a video where a hero tried to take out a shooter in a grocery store but a second one snuck up behind him, tragic. Stuck with me, now I’m locked in “be a little wimp, give up everything, try to survive” mode (of course the world might not be a perfect place if everyone were like that)

I’m always ambivalent. Yeah he’s right, and those drivers need to be called out, and traffic enforcement clearly isn’t doing anything … but he’s being stubborn, risking his life, when the guy is only getting a small ticket. You know he’s just going to be ragier next time. Here in the US I can’t see it going that well

That’s the unfortunate reality. You and I and he are sympathetic to other people’s space and well-being so it’s difficult in the moment to press more serious charges like assault with a deadly weapon when you can hope that the situation and being informed that he COULD have been charged with that will be enough to change his behavior.

UK police can be absolute shits too. Policing as a profession can attract people who absolutely should not have power over others, and the culture within the police can promote pretty fucked up attitudes in ppreviously decent people; it’s qualitatively the same pernicious problems that we see in the US, albeit to a much milder degree.

General condemnation of the police aside, I’m glad to see how this particular incident was handled.

People sometimes say SMH like this for emphasis. Another one I’ve seen is “SMHing my SMH”. It’s not meant to be literal. It’s similar to when an acronym becomes its own word, like ATM machine.

No. Acronyms are words, it’s in the “nym” part. Initialisms where you pronounce each letter individually are not acronyms, since they ain’t words.

                  @xeekei@lemmy.zip is right.

An acronym is a word formed from the initial letters of other words and pronounced as a single word.

An abbreviation is a shortened version of a word or phrase used to save time and space, avoid repetition, or follow convention.

All acronyms are abbreviations, but not all abbreviations are acronyms.

SMH and ATM are both abbreviations. NASA, radar, laser etc. are all acronyms.

I don’t know what that emoji means, sorry. Have you never encountered this before? Acronyms sometimes transition into their own words that are divorced from the original meaning.

ATM originally meant automated teller machine, but after it took on its own separate word identity, people started adding in machine. It’s weird If you know the original acronym, but it’s a natural phenomenon.

It’s a weird fucking acronym. I have never in my life hear a person actually say “shaking my head” but apparently some people say it SO FUCKING MUCH that I was seeing “SMH” for ten years before I even knew what it meant.
