I took a leadership role in my kids scout troop. Can’t do shit about this situation, but hopefully I can help these 70 kids get a good start on life and prepare for what’s to come.

I have a seedbox and would totally be up to seed Wikipedia. Is there an easy way to automate that always the newest release gets seeded? I don’t want to do it manually every day.

I don’t get AI editing Wikipedia. Surely AI gets it’s information from Wikipedia.

If the ai gets its info from Wikipedia, and the ai edits Wikipedia, and you do your fact checking with Wikipedia, then the information has to be true.

Lots of motives, ranging from well-meaning editors trying to use it to help them improve, all the way to government propaganda machines trying to control narratives.

My personal pet theory is LLM companies themselves trying to poison the well of public information, so that you’re forced to use AI instead of traditional search/sites.

My behavior has already started shifting towards asking AI because I know google results are already flooded with AI nonsense, so I might as well use the latest model and ask it directly. But the last thing we need is our access to information tied up in an AI blackbox

The best course of action is surely therefore not to use the AI blackbox? Using it only helps it in the long run

Finding alternative search engines and giving them your patronage instead must be a better tactic to preventing the closing off of information to the common person

that’s a step beyond my of-the-dome abilities but if you look on the backup site, lots of partners keep “the last 5 good backups” and i’m sure there’s a way to automate what you’re describing

Main backups are only done a few times a year. I just grabbed this years and last years for now. I would suggest multiple versions just so you can potentially cross reference and see what changed between updates. For example, what was removed can be just as informative as what was added.

Yeah, it’s all good advice except the part about getting yourself shot and having crack sprinkled on your corpse.

Boo them from a good safe distance when you have people with you. Don’t confront cops.

I personally like to have the tiniest, possibly imperceptible understanding that all they do is waste time. Just a little bit of pity in my voice when I talk to them in person. Pretend you’re talking to someone who doesn’t deserve respect.

I got pulled over for expired registration. “Oh hi there, how can I help you? Gosh sorry, I just didn’t realize. Sure I’ll wait.”

How much do you get paid to do this? It’s way too much. Look at you thinking you’re important with your uniform.

Sincerely: use the Internet less. It’s better for you anyway, but in general we’re seeing a real crackdown from corporations and governments. In response if we all just stop using it so much because it’s becoming unpleasant anyway they won’t know what to do. And maybe a happy side effect if everyone starts to kick the Internet habit is the population becoming generally more sane

I hear what you’re saying but I think I would probably never talk to anyone without the internet and be very less sane

      • I didn’t say not to use it at all, I said to use it less. If you genuinely are unable to connect to other people without the Internet then I am truly sorry about your situation, but if it’s at all remotely possible that you could connect with people offline - even if you first meet them online - then I really urge you to figure out a way to do it because that’s how we break the power of these ghouls, we stop using “their” stuff for our needs

Yeah fair. I used to go to more stuff but a lot of it is the thought of getting covid freaks me out and I don’t live somewhere with a lot of meetup groups around anymore. Honestly I’ve always seen it as the other way, where irl spaces (especially ones that take money) are run by hostile or incompatible forces, and the internet as something with more exceptions to that, even now that it’s become worse.

          • It’s certainly a tricky one, I feel like a lot of us have some trauma still from covid anyway, and the world is just acting like it has gone away. At least in the real world there are spaces outside that can’t be controlled that easily. I feel you on the meetup groups too, I’d love some local queer friends but I don’t know where the local queer people are meeting up. But the Internet is becoming the ultimate hostile space very quickly and sadly we need to either accept it or try and pull away now before it’s too late

The Internet is a big place with plenty of value in it still. If all you do is scroll the big 5 brainrot sites, then yeah you’re probably not going to find a ton of enrichment, but that doesn’t mean ‘Internet bad’. That’s almost like saying ‘food is bad for you’

If you really want to make a difference, contribute to the spaces on the Internet that are good rather than avoiding it all together

I didn’t say “Internet bad” and I didn’t say not to use it at all. I said to use it less, with the implication being to cultivate a life outside of it too, too many people just use the Internet as much as possible and they put up with whatever shit gets thrown at them to keep using it. Like, I’m in the UK so I’m getting hit full-force with this ID shit and I’ve just decided that - as far as I possibly can - if a site needs to see my ID to access it maybe I just don’t need that site. I’m not showing my ID, I’m not using any of the clever tricks people have come up with to get around it, I’m not using a VPN to get around it, I just won’t use that site, and if that leads me to spending less time online then so be it. And if we could all make that decision then things might pick up a lot faster
