Really does suck. My dad had a problem with alcohol and I always refused to partake in that unlike my brothers but he doesn’t really have hobbies and so all the gift ideas sucked as it’s beer.
I get him gloves and scarfs now 😂
Why is it so difficult for people to get to know their own family members so they don’t need to resort to generic gift guides? If that’s too much, then just ask them what they would like. Communication is dead it seems, despite nearly 100% connection time
A gift card for any hobby related stuff is way better than any guide. I cannot dream to know which bee hat or hive brush (if thats a thing) would be an upgrade, but Im certain that he can pick out something himself that he might have “wanted” but not needed, and if I stipulate that the gift card is for want and not need, he will buy something nice.
I did the same with a bike store a few years ago and he upgraded the pedals so he can use them both with ordinary shoes as well as the “locking” shoes.
I know a lot of people don’t like being given money because it’s impersonal, so I like to pair a gift card with something creative: baked goods or candy, a mug, an ornament, a picture or card, etc. You can source materials secondhand or find them outdoors. The food route is especially useful for people who aren’t into small decorative things.
I would be happy with just the gift part personally. If someone takes the effort to make me something it means a lot to me. A gift card or money doesn’t really do much for me.
Great addition :) Nice way to personalize. In our family its highly unsual to get money (cas or transfer), that only happens if the giver is unsure which shop is preferred and it usually means a joint shopping trip. Thats also a bonding moment where the reciever can talk about the hobby and why the item(s) chosen are picked
I love shopping trips! My uncle took me on one when I was a teenager and it’s one of my best memories.

I found a knife in the woods of Mt. Hood and refurbished it for my friend that "never had a good kitchen knife.’ It might have previously been used for murder, but that’s a good man gift, if you grind it up real nice and recreate the pommel correctly, it’ll do true to you.

But what you buy me, will never be what I actually want. We have a family tradition, where we go online as a family, and order stuff we actually want. No need for surprises and pretending to be happy with something you didn’t want.
On a similar note, the family christmas dinner is pizza with pre-made tapas/snacks, consumed in PJs while watching netflix. No one’s stressed, tired or spending too much time in the kitchen.
Cancer and too many funerals, really does shed a family of fucks to give.
Ordering something gift wrapped for yourself and delivering it to them so they can give it to you and you can act surprised and tell them how thoughtful they are is next level gifting.

Tears of joy, maybe. Cheap gifts are part of Amazon’s lifeblood. It’s certainly not the first place most people think of when seeking out something $500+.
If you can paint -at all- like it doesn’t even have to be that good, paint a flower pot with pictures of old pets who have died over the years, plant something super easy to keep alive, like an aloe or snake plant, and write them something about your shared memories. Include the pics you used for the painting so they can reminisce with you.

I have such a hard time buying for people and being bought for. I mean I appreciate anything I get because it IS really the thought that matters to me, but…Like, if I want something, I’ll just buy it. If I haven’t bought it already, it’s too expensive to get for me as a gift.
